Re: Breaking hound from unwanted game

Ive used this method with pretty good success on hog dogs. I got it from another board so I dont want to take credit for it. Im not sure the fellows name that came up with the idea but it worked for me.

Go out on a trail that you have laid for the dog, hog scent in my case. Then at a certain point along the trail I broke over a limb and started a deer trail at an 90 angle to my hog trail about 75 yds down the new deer trail I put a mouse trap with a cottonball soaked in the deer trail scent. The dog got a nip on the nose nothing serious but learned that the deer trail wasnt any fun. After his run in with the mouse trap I scolded him and put him back in the pen. The next day I put him on a hog and praised heck out of him when he found a hog. I only had to do this once with this particular dog and he hasnt run deer since.

I know that this post was long but I hope it was some help to you. Or at least it may give you an idea.

I use Tri-Tronics shock collars to break mine. I will try to find elk, deer or coyotes and dump my dogs on the tracks. I let them get started good and then try to melt them down. When they lick their butts you've done a good job. This sounds harsh but hounds aren't very smart and need some to the bone lessons.

This is one of two methods used by the guys who catch game in my area. The other is to run the hound down while it is still on the track, hang him with a catch rope and whip him until he passes out. Revive him and repeat once. This was too harsh for me so I use the shock collars.

When I ran hounds we would go trap a coyote and take it to a designated spot and tie it up just off the road . Then we would road the dog by it and go rescue the coyote from him and send the hound to finishing school with a shock , have the coyote moved to another spot and repeat the process . After the second time around the hound usually figuered it out. Worked for me..

Hi I Use Tri-Tronics Shocking Collar. I Have The
Trashbreaker it works great and they learn fast.
if the hound has any smarts at all it should
be easy to brake the dog good luck to you and
run them hounds.

ive heard of lots of ways to break dogs without a shocking collar in last 30 years. in my opinion none are as good as a shock collar. shock collars are getting better all the time. most can be adjusted at transmitter. i think the way to do it is to not fry them. ive used the choke em method and the fry their brains out method also. i dont think its nessescary for most hounds. if you can , work dog a lot with collar and make them see its just not worth it. dont try to do it all at once. i know what you mean when you say hounds arent too smart. well they have a high tolerance for pain. what makes them usefull also makes them a little harder to train.if your dog is scared to death of a shock collar then your not using it right. the best hounds are the toughest. sometimes the toughest are the hardest to get straight, pete

I use to like Wicks method of pre-braking them off of trash game as pups.
[Back when it was leagal for me to hound hunt /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif ]
Stake the pup out on a run. At the far end of the run hang the tarsel gland of a deer or elk hooked to an electric fence charger. when they came to investigate...  /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Repeat this a couple times a year.
