Reaching out to those with a FLIR LS64 or similar!(Battery Problem?)

Hello everyone!

First of all I apologize if I posted this in the wrong section.
Any Mod can feel free to move this into a more appropriate section if needed.

I own an LS64 and it has worked flawlessly the two years I've had it now.

But yesterday I encountered something totally new with my camera.
I was out using it like usual, when the battery indicator on the screen turned into a full red color. And the charging LED also turned red.

Now I have to say the battery was almost out of juice and I haven't used the camera in a few weeks. I also never used the camera to the point where it completely runs out of power. I also never recalled seeing the regular red "low-on-batt" stage as I was not looking through it all the time.

So my question is: Has anyone else encountered this?
Is this normal upon complete drainage of the battery, or is something else at stake here? My first thought was an overheated battery but the camera was not any warmer than usual. Any answers would be greatly appreciated!

My FLIR RS32 will do the same thing. When the led and the onscreen display turn red, your out of battery. You will only have a few more minutes of run time till it powers itself off.

Yeah thats what I was hoping! So I guess it's nothing to worry about then

Not to hijack the thread, has anyone found an external battery tray or a way to use regular batteries. When an emergency arises and you need the FLIR NOW, who has time to charge the batteries? What are you guys doing? Do you leave it on the charger all the time and is that OK? I think there's an engineer that should be looking for a new job. I'd much rather be able to drop in a new set of batteries, and go.

Thing is, the LS is made for law enforcement. So here comes a situation where we suddenly need to go look for this fugitive hiding in the woods. Wait! we need to charge our FLIR? Really?

Never have experienced any problems with years and years of of use in the FLIR LS, PS, RS internal Lithium ion batteries like I' ve had with the [beeep] CR123s dying in the field on me at the most frustrating in-opportune times. Not to mention the hundreds of $$$ I've saved not using the expensive CR123s.

Ive only had my FLIR RS32 for 2 years now and the battery is getting weak. My buddy bought the same RS32 last year and his battery is getting really bad and wont take a charge.

Also had weird times when i plugged the RS in to charge and it would power on. It got so aggravating that i just set my timer to 5 minutes so if it happened it would only be on for 5 min then power down and finish charging.

Can't think of anyone else who wouldn't rather have a user accessible battery. There are rechargeable Li Ion batteries. At least you can carry extras and swap them out as opposed to-NOTHING.

I own and use 14 PS, LS, RS different thermals that have thousands of hours on them up to four years old and have never experienced any problems of any kind with any of them.

BTW, you do NOT want to use rechargeable CR123/18659 batteries in thermal gear anyways, only primary batteries.

I did the lastest update to it and havent noticed it powering up when charging.
Ive got a RMA from them, i just cant be without it right now. our farm has alot of hog problems.
Im debating on buying another thermal and that way i will have a extra when i need it the most.

Sure can, I do it all the time.

You'd be smart to charge it up prior to wanting to use it, just like you'd be smart to carry spare primary batteries to replace the dead ones in a non-rechargeable unit instead of leaving the batteries at home.....

Yeah I know. If I think I hear someone breaking into my barn, I'll ask him to wait while I charge my FLIR. What about when you don't know you're going to need it?

Not a problem, a fully charged FLIR PS, LS, RS etc. lasts bout two years sitting idle, so you simply turn it on, does not get much easier than that, press the ON button and it is operational

Anyone else have a fully charged FLIR LS64 that has stayed fully charged unused for 2 years? If so, mine must be defective. I'm lucky if 4-5 months later it will even be 1/2 charged.

I did not state that it will stay " fully charged", it stated that after you let it sit idle after fully charging it, you just turn it on.
