Rebarrel 270 WSM??

I have a Winchester M70 featherweight in 270 WSM made in around 2008. Can I and should I get it rebarrelled into a 6.8 Western?? Factory ammo for the 270 WSM is very hard to find. I believe the bolt face is the same, so all it seems to require is a new chambered barrel. I've never had a rifle rebarrelled, is it something easy enough to do on a Winchester M70 featherweight? What are your thoughts?
Thanks!

How does it shoot? If good I'd really look into stocking up on ammo when you find it or investing in reloading gear. I doubt the 6,8 Western is going to be anymore popular than the 270 WSM.

You might want to check to see if the WSM action is long enough for the 6.8.W.

If you're shooting factory ammo I'd seriously consider rebarreling it to a 6.5 PRC. Not only will ammo be considerably easier to find but the factory made Hornady 6.5 PRC ammo shoots crazy good.

Any decent gunsmith can rebarrel your rifle for you. I'd suggest going with a slightly larger barrel diameter/contour than what your factory barrel is. Finding a 6.5 barrel blank in stock versus finding a .277 barrel in stock will be much easier. I just bought a 6.5 barrel from Red Hawk Rifles earlier last week and it was delivered Friday. They had multiple different brands and sizes in stock.

Re-barreling a Winchester is easy....if your a gunsmith. Or someone capable of doing the work. IDK if anyone makes a prefit barrel for Winchester. If they do then it would be something you can do yourself but will still require some specialty tools. I think I would leave the M70 as it is and do like AWS suggested and buy some reloading equipment. Components are out there, you just will have to do some shopping. I think keeping your M70 original will be to your benefit also. (This is just my personal opinion if it were mine.)

This is a better idea. I'd rather have a 6.5 PRC than a 6.8 Western.

This might be the best option. I have reloading equipment, just not 270 WSM dies, but they are easily acquired. Brass might be a little harder to come by. I have probably 40 once fired cases.

Thanks for the replies. I'll just have to think about it for a while.

40 pc of brass could last you a lifetime in a hunting rifle. One of my coyote rifles has less than that.

Here are some thoughts coming from a guy who has a 6.5 PRC and a 270 Win.

I have always admired the 270 WSM, and the 6.8 Western. I have had interest that comes and goes, and have looked around for brass for both. NOTHING!!! Quite a lot of time spent really.

Look up 6.5 PRC and most outfits right now have at least a couple brands in stock right now! Lapua even makes it.

Your WInchester Model 70 has a mag well around 3.015 inches. That rifle is very suitable.

The two, .270's magnums will suite you better for larger game. 160's around 2900 are splendid.

If you are a deer hunter, go with common availability, and less recoil.

I can only imagine a 270WSM in a light rifle kicks like a mule?

The hornady precision hunter ammo is very accurate. It was more than a decade since i bought factory ammo. I bought the rifle and a box of that stuff. Did 3 sighters for the scope, and a shot a 5 shot, 1.5" group at 200 yards.

Large rifle primers are hard to find right now if you want to reload. I believe you will get primers before you find brass for the 270's
