rebarreling a rifle.....?????

how much would it cost me to rebarrel my 700 sps with a 7.5 twist barrel in 243win??? Would i have to send my barreled action off to get it installed and headspaced? Any recomended places???? thanks guys

You will normally give the action to the gunsmith who is doing the machine work on the barrel. He will ream the chamber, thread it, etc, and probably square the face. In the process he will headspace it.

The cost will vary widely depending on the smith and on the barrel chosen, but expect to spend several hundred dollars even with a "cheap" custom barrel.

What do you plan to do with the rifle? If it's benchrest competition, you will want a different quality (cost) barrel than if it's for hunting, and probably a different smith too.

Here's a couple of places that make barrels and install them.

I've had these guys make me a couple of barrels and install one on my Rem 600

I've had one barrel made here and I'm very pleased with it also, I haven't had them do any gunsmithing but have heard they do nice work.

I'm sure there will be a few more places suggested but I haven't delt with any of them.

This is who I've used on my last 3 builds:

http://www.kampfeldcustom.com/
http://gaprecision.net/
http://www.rwsnydergunsmithing.com/secure-rwsnydergunsmithing/Scripts/default.asp

I'm guessing these guys charge around $250 to chamber/thread/headspace/crown a customer supplied barrel blank.

Expect to pay $150-$200 on avg., I'd say.

I've another build in the works at yet a different smith. He charges $75 for the above services! And only another $35 to square action face and lap bolt lugs! I would be a little scared at these prices, but I happen to know a few guys who have sent him a great deal of work over the years. He also only takes about 3 weeks. If I posted his name on internet I would most assuredly receive a death threat......

Yes, death threats would come, grin.

I've used GAP on a few builds with excellent results.

Ya think?

I had Karl install a bigger shifter on the bolt, he already had fluted it a few years ago. Then I had him open up the bolt face and install Sako extractor. Then sent it off yesterday.

For another $60 he is bead blasting the bolt body and matte bluing it, and bead blasting the SS Krieger tube.

I'm thinking range trip tomorrow. As ususal, you can meet me out there if you want.....

Yeah, keep that one to yourself.

+1
A friend had an old Herters (BSA) 243 rebarreled by them.
It shoots as good or better than most, and for a guy on a budget they're awfull hard to beat.
I'd use em for a hunting rig in a heartbeat.

Pac-Nor's done a few for me that I'm more than happy with.

Bob Green, Greg Tannel, and Darrel Holland are a few of the well known guys with good reputations too.

I don't think the price is the most important thing. $300./$500. has nothing to do with quality. Just because it cost more doesn't make it better. Good parts are every bit as important as good workmanship. Like the old saying goes, you can't polish a turd. Do some research and find a good smith that fits your budget or one you can save towards. The smith that did my 243AI charged me under $500. That included a Hart barrel, chamber job, trued action, squared the bolt face and lapped the bolt lugs and put a nice finish on the barrel. Oh ya, and he even put a nice target crown on it. Find a good gunsmith and give him the right parts and you will end up with a nice rifle.

The more "Frills" you add, the price goes up. Most flute jobs, on the cheap side will cost you $125. Everything you add has a price tag on it. If you want to keep it in the low end, lose some of the fancy and just build a nice rig. JMO

Check website of Marks Skaggs.
http://www.skaggsgunsmithing.com/pricing.shtml

He's rebarreled about 5 rifles for me in past 4 years. Licensed gunsmith, does good work and reasonable in his prices. For example: charges $100-$125 to chamber and fit barrel on a Remington. Depending on manufacturer of rifle, how much he'll charge for rebarreling. Rebarreling a mauser with a short chamber pre-threaded barrel...only $65.

Two problems with Mark. One, he is in Oregon....shipping from Texas to Oregon via post office around $15 last barreled action I sent him....he'll probably charge around $20+ for returning it. Second, he has a good reputation and has no lack of gunsmith work....so he may not be taking in any work or may be a number of months before you get the rifle back.

I had my first rebarrel job done this year. I sent off a weatherby vanguard to ERShaw and had the works done to it. Squared it up lapped the lugs. Then they installed a stainless 26in barrel with a break on it. Came out to just under 28inch the total cost was 550.00 thats shipped back to me. They did a very nice job at a reasonable price. I havent shot this rifle yet but i have owned an AR with a shaw barrel and it was very accurate and the barrel cleaned really easy and did not foul at all. So im a believer in there barrels and work. Theres no doubt in my mind this 257 weatherby i had built will be a shooter. from the time i sent the barreled action in untill i got it back was 4 months. That was another reason i went with shaw. Some of the others was a year for turn around. heres the rifle i had them do. I did all the stock work they dont do any stock work. You only send them the trigger on the barreled action.

You have to really look at barrel contours and make sure the new barrel will work with the factory stock. You may have an extra cost for bedding/trigger job also.

We have 4/5 gunsmith in our town good barrel like Kreiger SS ,chambering, bedding, action squared etc, trigger job $650 to $800 if you use a CM then add bluing. I have a good local gumsith he's running from 6mos to a good year behind depending on who's barrel he's using.

You need someone to do the total job from barrel to stock fitting. Well good luck
