recoil pad trimming

I cut some of the butt stock off of my savage. is there a way at home to trim the excess off (recoil pad) and make it look good?

I've shortened a few stocks. This is kind of what I do and I'll try to explain it. After the stock is cut I'll remount the recoil pad that has masking tape on it. The masking tape will be between the stock and recoil pad and will give you a visible traceable surface. You can then trace around the new contour of the stock with a very sharp pencil or a very fine ink pen. I even cut around the contour with an exacto knife before I remove the recoil pad. You now have the contour traced onto the pad. Depending on how much material has to be removed I will use belt sanders, finish sanders, hand sanding and files. When you get close to the profile just take your time and check it often and you should end up with a factory looking job. Also tape the stock before you cut it so it doesn't splinter. Dave
