In my opinion, most lowers are equal. You have three main categories; Polymer (plastic), forged aluminum, and billet. I personally have a New Frontier Armory polymer lower and have zero complaints, I would buy another one. I also have a Spikes lower, some thing, no complaints. Billet is for those guys who care about bling, I see no reason why you need one. If I had to choose only one, I would take a standard forged lower. The only big advantage polymer has is price, it's usually cheaper. But holiday season has brought the price down on forged lowers. There is no difference in quality between brands on the forged lowers (again, this is my opinion). I'm pretty sure some of your "cheaper" brands roll off the same machines as the "high quality" brands, they just have different markings.

Here's probably the best deal on a forged lower for ya.... if you miss out on this, i've seen a bunch of others in the $60-70 range too....

Since you say you are building for "Varmint", as opposed to "Predator" hunting, I would suggest a 1/8 twist barrel as the fastest twist, since most Varmint shooting involves lighter bullets at a higher velocity for better trajectories at longer distances...

My last "Varmint" upper had a 1/14 twist so that I could push 40gr bullets at near .204 velocities and still utilize up to 55gr rounds for Predators...Both of my carbine length barrels are 1/9 twists and give me a wide range of bullet weights (40gr-68gr)...

I will second the forged lower unless you want to spent a little more money, or have special features incorporated from the maker...

I agree with Old Turtle, get a forged lower. Joe Bob Outfitters has good deals on them. I have owned a Plum Crazy polymer lower and will never own another one.

Invest in a forged lower if you want to save money in the long run. Billets are expensive and the polymer models I have seen are not much cheaper than some of the forged ones and I don't believe the quality is there either. A 1/9 twist is a versatile barrel which will allow you to shoot a wide range of bullets.

I would stay away from polymer. I really like the billet lowers they look better with the built in trigger guard. I know Scott at Specialized Dynamics has some in stock ready to go. Shoot him a email scott@specializeddynamics.com

Keep checking back at JoeBob's - they had Spartan brand billet lowers for $119. These have trigger overtravel adjustment screw and allen screw retention for mag release (no pin to drive in).

I received mine within a couple days of ordering. VERY impressed with the quality.
