Red Fox

I have noticed there are not many pics on the site of people calling and shooting red fox. Out here in West Texas they have become pretty scarce, lots of greys, but very few red. Is that the case everywhere?

Here in southeast Minnesota we have little red fox too. Where we hunt in southeast Minnesota we see lots of coyotes and a small amount of red fox. In southeast Minnesota we have little fox because the coyotes kill the fox population, and the coyotes also kill most of the foxes prey, and the fox are forced to go north therefore there are more red fox in the northern part on Minnesota.

There's you answer right there. When coyotes move in they kill off the reds. Delta Waterfowl has done predator studies in the "duck factory" to prove this. This is a good thing there since the reds are about 10 times more effective predators on nesting ducks than coyotes. Biology 101 says "two species cannot occupy the same niche". In other words one species will out compete the other. Niche is that portion of the habitat where the animal makes it "living". They may occupy the same area but they have to utilize or "make their living" using different facets of it.

I've found a small pocket of foxes here in West central Minnesota that seems to have quite a few tracks. More than I've seen in quite a few years.

I'm very happy with the lack of foxes in general though. I miss the high numbers we used to have.

Randy- Why are you happy with the lack of foxes if you also miss the high numbers you used to have? Is it because of their impact on other species, particalarly game birds?

If your after foxes then come to Australia. We have so many foxes here. They are constantly baited and still they survive. A friend and I went onto a property that was baited only a couple of weeks after the baits were laid and still we scored quite a few. One thing i noticed was if we went hunting in an area that was baited only a week before we got there we usally saw more feral cats (i dont hear you guys talking much about them over there or do the coyotes hit them pritty hard??). Last time we were out spotlighting we saw over 20 foxes in a night. This weekend im hopfully heading out to a new location with a friend who says he use to see a few there without even calling them which means when i get stuck into them with my callers people have sent from the US im sure to score a few.

Dfox, Whats going on? I was just noticing you are from Big Spring. I hunt about 30 miles North East from there, (Lake JB Thomas) Yea, I agree, I do not see any Red's anymore. I almost had a Bobcat "ON" my truck last weekend. I was calling and I heard all kinds of noise, by the time I grabbed the spotlight, he scoot the boot. Less than 2 minutes later, he poped his head up about 30 yards from my truck. I shot and missed ((For my first time with my .243)) My huntin' buddy said he could still see him, but I never could, I walked up to where I saw him, "Post up with a Glock, but he had dissapeared". Do you have a place to call at?? Maybe one of these days we can meet up. Shoot me an Email: Jimmy@Dmi1.com

A few years ago I watched a coyote rundown and kill a redfox in Montana. I was phesant hunting in a coolie and watched it from 100-200 yards away in a stubble field. The fox was fast but the coyote was much faster. The coyote came out of the brush about 30 yards from the fox and caught him within 100yds. The coyote didn't just kill it, he tore it to pieces, after about 2 minutes of tearing it up he walked off and continued hunting. He didn't eat a bite. It was one of the most interesting things I've ever seen in the field.

hi all,
we actually have quite a few foxes around where i live in michigan. i rabbit hunt one area that used to be a great spot tons and tons of bunies but at that time it was rare to see any fox sign. but in the last couple of years it is getting harder and harder to find the rabbits and yep...now tons and tons of fox sign. i also grouse hunt the same area and the numbers of grouse have stayed about the same as before the fox invasion. i think the fox invasion has been caused by the coyote population expanding to the north of me. there are not too many coyote around me yet but there will be .in my case the coyote has moved in to the north of me but instead of just killing the reds off they have forced them to moved south towards me. it is nice being able to hunt them now but it sure would be nice to see a rabbit now and then also.
later, dave
