red fox

we have a ranch that has lots of coyotes, as well as some fox. in fact the only predator we have called in and shot was a grey fox.

the question is, how can i know if there are any red fox in the area?? i have seen several fox, but all of them have been at night, and even though i know they were foxes, i cant recall if they were gray or red. so, do reds and grays live in the same areas?? whats the difference??

They can live in the same areas. Red prefer a little more open country than the greys but in areas that also hold coyotes, the reds will hold a bit tighter to the cover too.

The difference is a little bit of size (reds are bigger) reds are a bit fluffier, greys still have quite a bit of red in their coat but they are mostly grey down their backs and sides.

thanx! i hope to kill me a red to get the skin tanned, or maybe even do a mount. i dont know if we have reds though, i just hope.

any more??

Mex3D, red fox barely venture into Chihuahua Mexico if at all.
Your chances of calling a red fox are slim and none, but I bet you can call a ton of grays.
Gray fox dominate red fox and coyotes eat em both if they can catch them.
By the way, you also have kit fox. Personally I don't wast a bullet on them.
I'm really interested on how you do down there when it comes to numbers of animals taken, Good luck

thanx billy. im just starting in this predator calling thing. i have called just a couple of nights so far. i have never fail to at least see something. however, either they are on the move, or hang out in the brush where we dont get a shot. we seen coyotes and fox each night we have called, so i think there are numerous foxes as well. we have only killed a grey fox. but coyotes are numerous, they have even stolen some of our goats. so i want to try and thin the population a little. there are very few if any coyote callers in the area, i think thats why we have very good responses.

btw, whats the kit fox??

Mex3D, it looks like you got a kit fox! Very nice! When you are looking for reds check their tracks. They are very different looking tracks. The gray's tracks are a little wider than the red's. The red's have a raised V shaped line from one side of the foot pad to the other and more fur marking around its toes. Hope this helps and good luck on them... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
