Red Light and Thermal

Does anyone scan with a red light then switch to their thermal rifle scope once you get eyes? I just received my first thermal scope (pulsar) and have been playing around the last two nights. Scanning with the rifle seems like it would be easy to miss a lot. I can't sight in till this weekend, so my experience is still very limited.

ya one guy hunting solo . Panning and searching with any rifle scope set-up with either Therm. or NV mounted takes to much energy and way less efficient . but if that all you got then, it is what it is .
Best to scan with Therm. and shoot with your dedicated night rifle set-up and on the wait, mounted with NV or thermal scope .
For Night, and the most efficient is 2-guys, one search and spot, and the other dedicated on the rifle .

I absolutely would not use any kind of light to scan if you have a thermal scope. Scan with the gun mounted thermal until you can get a handheld thermal as well. Going solo and scanning with gun mounted thermal isn't easy but Im sure you will spook way more with red lights than you would miss without it if you have thermal.

How would it be with 2 guys with thermal scopes? I would think almost as good as one guy scanning and one guy shooting? Less area for one guy to cover but you still have 2 shooters .

You will miss wayyyyy more with the light than you ever will with the thermal. You'll be amazed to how many coyotes you've missed in the past with red lights. I scan with my scope/gun when i have a friend with me using monocular. Get a good tripod the the center of the gun is mounted over the center of the pod and you can cover 180 degrees pretty easily... 2 guys with scopes i'd each cover 180.

While I'm not particularly fond of pointing a loaded rifle at something I may not want to shoot, your best bet if that is all you have (IMHO) is to go with a standup tripod like the Night Stalker. You'll have much more flexibility to scan while you stand.

Thanks for the info guys. I will give it a go with the thermal only, that is why I bought it. I also have a pig saddle in route so I will be set up shortly. Makes sense that it will be a lot easier to scan from a tripod.

I scanned for awhile with rifle scope, here is what's works pretty darn good in my opinion. Get a pig saddle and two different size bipods (PRIMOS) trigger sticks. Mount the pig saddle to primos trigger sticks. The trigger sticks in bipod work really well when moving the gun in a 180* movement. The trigger adjust IS A MUST the ground is way more uneven than one might think. You will be able to adjust as neeeded on the fly because of there trigger system. That's what I did after using multiple bipods. Pig saddle and a tripod worked ok to on flat ground spots.Sitting on hills bipod...
