Red lights or night vision

It seams when I read in this night hunting section on this site it is almost all about night vision equipment. How many on this site use red lights to hunt with?

Night vision not allowed here in So Cal. I just started using the Coyote Light with the red LED instead of my usual 12 volt lights. Works well on light shy animals. Grizz

night eyes scanning lights AND night eyes gun lights on both my calling rigs here. Last weekend I went out with a guy that had all the NV and thermal gear. after the first west we just used the red lights and had the best night ever.

I spent about $1k on red lights thinking it would be the golden ticket and then hunted my [beeep] off for 6 months with only 1 coyote to show for it. The terrain, set ups, and so on for this area just aren't ideal for lights. I was converted to thermal and NV by a friend and immediately sold off all my lights. If I had to go back to using lights I wouldn't be night hunting any more.

reaper4...what exactly did your friend have for thermal and night vision?

I hunted for a long time with red lights and I think I somehow managed to scare the [beeep] out of more coyotes than I called in. The problem with red lights around here is that there is no open areas to hunt, it's mostly thick woods. I can tell you with certainty, you turn on a red light when a coyote is standing 50yds away and you will be amazed at how fast it can disappear.

I now use thermal and GEN 3 night vision. The only light I bring is a IR light and I don't even like using that.
Red lights can most definitely be effective, but, just not so much in the kind of terrain I'm forced to hunt in.
Just like NoName, I don't think I would be doing a whole lot of night hunting if I had to use lights again.

I have a mini mum Gen III Pinnacle monocular and a Gen III D740 mounted on my 7.62x39 AR that I use for feral pigs. I've killed several coyotes and foxes with it while out hog hunting, but I still prefer red lights for predator hunting! There's just something about watching those red eyes coming in your direction!
It's really freaky when the eyes just "float" across the field toward you, until it gets close enough to be able to tell it's an owl!!
I just got a Nite Eyes red headlight a coule weeks ago....maiden yoyage was Friday night. Ended up with one nice male coyote and a male red fox!

I use Night Eyes scan light and Wicked shooting lights, both in red, when I am hunting alone and even most of the time when I hunt with a partner. Sometimes I will use a lLight Force 170 white spotlight to scan when I call for others to shoot. Still experimenting with the dimmable white lights!

Many of us on this forum still use red lights. They just keep getting nicer . Many lights & mounts to choose from now. Happy shopping !

Most of us here started with red lights and transitioned into NV. The best way to do it is buy a NV scanning unit for concealment first and use your kill light to shoot. Then when you want to make the move buy some type of NV scope for your rifle.

As a matter of fact I still have my first pair of Gen 1 Luna LN-PB3 binoculars that was my first NV scanning device. They are actually very good and have a built in illuminator. If someone here wants a deal on them PM me.
