Reeds?

I've been turning for a while now, but have never turned a call. Didn't know you could until I saw this area of PM. I am just getting started in this Coyote stuff and would like to make my own call.

I don't own and have never used a handcall before. I have been reading around on here and there are lots of things mentioned that I don't know what they are. Things like:

Open Reed
Closed Reed
What is the difference between the different material reeds (like metal, etc)? Do they make different sounds?

I'm kind of doing this backwards from where most of you started I'm sure... I know how to turn but know nothing about calls...

Thank you, PD

pd buster,

Im a bit new to alot of this stuff, but i can help you out a little bit, Check out some of the pics of calls that are for sale or have been sold on the custom calls section of this board., you can get an idea on the different look of a closed reed and an open,, The open reeds use a piece of mylar, usually cut from a sheet, and held in place between a toneboard and a wedge. you will see alot of them with bands holding the reed in place. The closed reed calls are made by drilling a small hole thru the call and inserting either just the small metal or metal and mylar reeds or by putting this reed into a reed sleeve. you can see some pics of what the reeds look like at allpredator calls.com under the accessories section, then look for the voices. they sell different ones as well as an assortment pack.
IM sure you will get some other good posts, just wanted to give you some kind of early response to point you in the right direction while you are stil online tonight.

And diferent reed materials do make slightly diferent sounds. You can do something a bit diferent with each of them.Even the thickness of the reed material can change them.

Open reed calls, which use mylar, are the most versatile. They can be built for a specific job or for total versatility. They are the most dificult to construct.

Closed reeds are the simplest calls. Most make rabbit and bird distress. You can design them to be a bit more versatile by making them two piece and adding a band to the reed to change the pitch of the call. These all use the JC products reeds mentioned in the above post.

It is a very interesting hobby. Jimmie
