Reloading 223 with IMR 4064. need min and max with 40-50 grns

4064 is really not recommended for the 223. It's slow burn characteristics is better suited for cases in the 243-308 size.

Sounds like you may want to buy some H-335 ( or W 748 or Benchmark) & a reloading manual. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

4064 is not first choice for 223.... because it is a little slow.... but 4064 will work o.k. .... dupont used to list loads for it all the time... but you will not get the velocity you would get from a.... more appropriate powder for a 223 sized case

do not go below 24 gr.....
on 40 & 50 gr bullets you can put as much in the case as will fit.... and will be o.k in not being over pressure....

on heavier bullets go to hodgdons website....

with a full case ( or 85% to 90% full) you may get pretty good accuracy.......

probably will not be able to get the velocity you could get from benchmark, or h335... or 748 or rl7 or h322 or 4198 or xterminator or TAC or etc.....
powders normally thought of as being appropriate for a 223 sized case

I tried to load some 55gr balistic tips and some 60gr v-maxes with 4064 and started just above min. on each bullet weight. When I dumped the first 5rounds and bumped it up about 1/2gr the powder was getting up into the neck. I tried remington, winchester, and LC brass. They were all way up into the case neck with that powder. I didn't want to shoot a compressed load so I dumped all the powder back and went back to shooting h-335 and IMR 3031. These have been both good powders for me. With no compressed loads.

My 223 shoots GREAT with 69gr SMKs and 25.0gr 4064. It's a compressed load. Shoots awesome! 3000fps over the chrony from my 1:9" 26" Savage factory bull barrel.

5-shots, 100 yards, 0.301". It's not hard to shoot groups like this.
