Reloading Hevi-Shoot

Guys: Looking to reload Hevi-Shoot for Goose hunting using new Dillon Press SL-900. Anyone currently doing these types of loads? Also cost of reloading versus buying from store? Thanks

I fairly recently took up hand loading shotgun shells (for coyotes). About half of what I've loaded are Hevi-shot. But since I'm using only new hulls, the only thing I have used my Mec press for is crimping. Powder and shot are weighed and poured by hand, wad put in by hand, mylar wrap by hand, filler beads and overshot card by hand. Then crimped on the press.

The process is basically the same for the nickel plated F loads I've done too, new hulls, press used for crimping only.

The Hevi-shot 3", 1-1/2 oz. BB loads I've been making cost about $1.25 each to load.

This is the first batch of shotgun shells I ever loaded, they're the HS BB load just mentioned.

I've been loading Hevi-Shot since about 2002, using a MEC loader.

I handload the shot using a shot dipper from BPI, but all the rest is done on the MEC.

With the current price of Hevi-Shot at about $38 per lb, a 1oz load would cost about $2.40 just for the shot, plus powder, primer and wad.

This stuff is lethal on game.

Check out the above links on this old Remington Hevi-Shot. It was $10.00 per pound now it is up to $13.90 per pound.

I bought 60 pounds of it. The sizes runs big, the #2s were more like size B and size #1. Some of the BB shot was BBB and a little bigger.

I've bought 30 lbs of the BB at the $10 price. If it goes down to that price again (it might?), I'll probably have to get another 10 lbs.

Been on the fence on buying some of the HS from Natchez - great stuff by all accounts, just wasnt sure I needed it for my uses. I watched it at $100, then $138, then $100, now $138 again........lol....next time it drops.....

I've seen that at Natchez for a few years now. It makes me want to buy another 12ga, just so I can use 'cheap' Hevi-Shot again.

Because of Hevi-Shot, I sold my 12's and 10ga guns, and am down to several 20's, all sxs, and I am leery of shooting large Hevi-Shot pellets, like 2's down the 20ga tubes.

Those are some nice looking loads.
I use new hulls on all my steel too.
Crimp station is the only one I use too.
I scale all the powder and shot.
The hevi-shot is way to $$$$ for me I use the lead F for coyotes and steel powder excellent

why do you say that? i never had or seen any that was copper plated.

Remington Hevi-Shot was before Remington Wingmaster HD shot came out. After Remington and E.M.I. Hevi-Shot split ways, Remington came out with the much better quality Remington Wingmaster HD shot.

Most of the Remington HD Waterfowl loads that I opened up or pulled out of catalogs was copper colored shot.

The copper colored shot in the above picture is Remington Wingmaster HD BB shot. The ugly shot is Hevi-Shot "B" shot made by E.M.I. Look at some of the dark ugly "B" Hevi-Shot, some of it is close to "T" shot in size.

The Remington HD BB, #2 & #4 shot that I pulled out of the Remington HD Ultimate Home Defense loads was silver colored shot.

The above picture is Rem HD Ultimate Home defense BB shot on the left and Federal Heavyweight #2 shot on the right. I have Rem HD BB shot right now that are silver and some that are copper colored.

The Federal Heavyweight #2 shot that I bought five cases of was dark, almost black shot. I found a great buy from a classified section on some Federal Heavyweight #2 shot 3" loads and when I opened them up the shot was bright silver.

I opened up some Remington Winmaster 3" #2 shot loads and did a pellet count on the shot because it looked bigger. The copper colored Rem HD #2 shot 3" 1-1/2 oz loads that I had opened before had around 124 pellets per shell.

These Remington Wingmaster HD 1-1/2 oz loads of #2 shot had right at 100 pellets per shell. So this Remington Wingmaster HD shot was really #1 shot in size.

I reloaded a bunch of 2-3/4" 1-3/8 oz loads with the Remington HD #1 shot that I luckily discovered.

I wish I could buy somemore Remington Wingmaster HD #1 shot to reload! LOL

Unless you open up a shell or two you really don't know for sure what is in the shell.
