My question is, does the coal measurement given by the manual a to the lands measurement, a jumped measurement, or just a good starting point? I understand that every gun is slightly different and chambers are different gun to gun. My reason for asking is that i bought Bergers reloading manual and 100 ,115 grn vlds, and without the proper tool for measuring my chamber were should i start.

Book COAL is more for safe function in all rifles. More of a magazine length kind of thing.

Use the search bar at the top of every page to figure out where you want to go from there. Lots and lots and lots of threads started about COAL. Its been hashed.

Smokeless is right. Every rifle is different. some like the bullet close to the lands and some not fussy about it. Easiest way is to get yourself that Hornady tool for that. It is different from bullet types to bullet types from the same manufactor in the same grains. best if your thinking of doing it, don't fool around and spend a couple of bucks, you'll be at ease then.
