since your reason for wanting to thin the herd is to help a friend get started in the hobby - its a worthy reason to get rid of older editions.  if i were in your shoes i would donate one or two good books to get him going , and point him in the direction of current editions to start asking for as x-mas gifts from the wife/kids/etc
