who makes the least expensive custom 700 clone?

Just wanting to know, dont want to sound cheap but what is the lower end on the price range?

Im asking for a friend.

There are so many out there that it's hard to say. However, I would check out Surgeon Rifle's RSR action or the Stiller Predator action. They won't run you much more (if any) than a trued Rem. 700 action.

Not to argue, but a new surgeon will run at least a grand if I'm not mistaken. I would think a trued Remington would be the cheapest. Go to 6mm.br and look around there. It will give you alot of good ideas.

I just had a Surgeon RSR action built with a Lilja 3 grove 1/10 20" in 308. The Surgeon is awesome and by the time you run the numbers with trueing up a remmy action, you are almost the same for the surgeon with alot more for your money! Check out the new RSR and you WON'T be disapointed!

Pyscodog, Surgeon recently brought one out for around $750 with some really nice features. I've done a few off Stiller's but might try a Surgeon for a new build. Never used a Lawton but have heard nothing but good. My favorite is BAT but even their new 700 clone hunting action is close to $1200.

xminerat, trued 700's aren't even a custom shop item, they're a gunsmith item

Be careful with the LOWER end Lawtons, some are not as straight as a factory rem action, meaning they still have to be trued which adds another $5-600 to the cost of action.Sometimes cheap will cost alot of money!!!!!!!!
Why not just buy the best??? There is only about $400 differance between top end clones and bottom.
I really like the Borden Timberline action for varmint rifles, but everybody has a opinion

JB- I haven't checked out the Surgeons as of lately. They were always out of my budget range. But if they offer one for around $750. that would be a deffinite way to go.

GA Precision also offers an action called a "Templar" made by phoenix machine. It is in the 800.00 range along with the surgeon rsr. It looks like a nice action and since GA is building on it and offering it I am sure it is quality as well. More food for thought.......

Not sure where you get your guns worked on but it cost more like 150 to get a remmy action trued. Lots of smiths around the country doing them in the 150-200 range.

Kino,
Not to argue with you but a new 700 action is in the $400 range. By the time you true it, you still have may have issues with bolt/receiver play (unless shimmmed) and primer blanking due to oversized firing pin hole. After all of that, the trued Remmy action is just that, a Remmy action which will not resale for more than a true custom action.

I usually don't buy a firearm to sell it but if I do, I want to know that I can recoup more of my money by going with a custom action. Lastly, I have Remington, Borden and Surgeon actions and the slickest of them all if the Borden followed by the Surgeon 591.

Hunt, you are correct that a factory remmy action that is BLUED is in the 400 range but not stainless. I think I may have miss typed what I meant. I think if you compare BUYING a new STAINLESS remmy and trueing it VS buying a new RSR Surgeon that there is not much money difference but with the surgeon you get ALOT more for your money. Also, like you stated, the resale is much more also. If you already own a remmy than IMHO I think its best to get it trued and keep it for life. Save some bucks as in a hunting situation you simply cannot see an accuracy difference in the field with a remmy vs custom action. Good shootin!

Here's a nice rem clone. BAT VR. My nicest yet. $1300. It is a very fine action though. I've had 3 BAT's and they are by far my favorite. Had Nesika and Stiller and like them, but not near like the BAT. By the time the rifle is completed it will be in the neighborhood of $4000. A bit too much if you ask me. Won't be doing another like it for some time. It's going to be a 20 tac. Had to sell another BAT to get this one. D
