REM 700 REBARREL

It will cost you about $500. to have the action trued, the lugs lapped and a match grade barrel installed. Next you'll need the action bedded and a scope to make uses of what you have. Or you can sell the 30-06 kick in $200 and get a new 25-06 ready to go.

If you want to shoot small groups, plan to spend alot of time reloading for it to find the perfect load and don'tplan to sell it to recoup your investment. Rebarrel it.

Second thought, if your going to put that much into a long range rifle there is a distinct lack of good bullets in .25 cal. 6mm, 6.5mm and 7mm have a better selection.

Dan and AWS gave you good advice. If you want a really accurate rifle consider a 6.5 06 or a 6.5 284. There just seems to be a lot of accuracy coming out of those 6.5's

The advantages of having a rebarrel are that along with truing an action you'll usually get an excellent barrel that usually will be more accurate than a stock factory barrel.

Got a friend doing that to a 300 Rem ultra-mag right now. Using his action he's going to have near two grand in it when it comes back from the smith and thats without rings and a scope.

25 caliber has a lot better bullets available than some years ago but would still be a bad choice for long range shooting. There is no support from bullet makers for 25 caliber long range shooting.

Not sure what you want it for but as far as whitetail hunting, a 25/06 is one of the best one's out there. Mild recoil & plenty of power with even decent placed shots. If your going to have a benchgrade custom built, a 25 would not be the way to go. Sounds like you want a hunting rifle. The 25/06 would be a great choice.

As far as the rebarrel: You get what you pay for... YOu could sell your rifle add a little to it & buy a factory 25. Or you could send your action & $500 to Pac-Nor or someone similar (I've had great results with them) and they will send you back a trued reciever with a high-quality barrel/fit. Otherwise you are just getting a mass produced "dice roll".
You could also prolly find a new take-off barrel in 25 somewhere on the net & have a local smith put it on. But then you are no better than just buying a new factory.

I would suggest having a quality barrel (Krieger, Hart, Lilja, Broughton, ect) put on by a recommended smith. If it's a pure breed hunting gun, I wouldn't be afraid AT ALL to send it to Pac-Nor click

A SS #2 22-24" Pac-Nor in a McM Classic or MR would make a very practical hunting rifle. IMHO.

Having it rebarreled would be the route I would go also. Everyone deserves to own at least one nice custom rifle. I would dump 500 to rebarrel an action I had on hand with a known quality tube before I would sell it just to take my chances on another factory rifle (not that there is anything wrong with that, my luck just isn't good enough to roll the dice and see /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ).

Pac-Nor would be a good choice for that kind of project. I have Broughton and Rock barreled rifles at the moment, but have heard nothing but great things about Pac-Nor. THey will probably do my next rifle. There is another very good smith in Ohio who works with Douglas barrels and has very good prices. I can't remember his name offhand, but I will try and find it and post a link. I think that would also be a good route to go on a hunting rifle.

I've had good luck rebarreling both the 700 and Win 70. I've had the actions trued, and most of the other little tweaks done to them. The nice part is once you do the action truing, you don't have to do it again...it's a one-time deal.

I've had very good luck with Krieger and Lilja barrels.

If I were to list the top 10 barrel makers in the USA, Pac Nor wouldn't make the top 20. I think the are soft, and Chris will tell you right quick, if the barrel won't shoot to your expectations it's not his fault. I just screwed one on for a guy that wanted a PN and It's just an average shooter, bad for my reputation. Should have known better, or wish I had been lucky enough to get a good one.

I fit a few custom barrels and Pac Nor is not one of my choices. They are not a bad barrel but more in the same category as Wilson. Good barrels but not like the top end barrels. A Krieger, Lilja, or Obermyer may cost more but they will always replace them for the asking, even if they can see no defects.

I've only had two custom barrels made, Pac-Nor has done both of them and I'm more than satisfied. They rebarreled my Rem 600 to 6x45mm and built the 25-204 barrel for my Savage, which I intalled.

I say Obermeyer or Mike Rock barrels. If you want a 25/06 go for it, don't let others talk you out of having one. I consideredthe 25.06 in the past, but what changed my mind was I dislike LA. I think the 25/06 would be great for hunting and a fun overall caliber to own.
