rem 700 vls or rugar m77 target

HEy guys my father this year has told me he is going to purchase me another gun for x-mas and ive decided between a rem 700 vls in 22-250 or a rugar m77 target in 22-250 anyone had any experience with either rifle in his caliber

I love my Ruger M77 heavy barrel .22-250 but it is the older tang safety model that has a NICE light crisp trigger. From what I have heard is the newer M77 with the 3 way safety have horrible triggers. Not something that can't be changed. Timney makes them just for that model. Ruger makes a solid gun for your money.

Well I have the vls in .243, still factory with a cheap sportview scope. She'll do groups like this if I do my part. I plan on upgrading the glass and a triggor job for next year.
You know wouldn't it be nice if you could take your two final choces to a range, like a test drive - hey they should install indoor achery ranges at the DMV too.
Im sure both rifles have great qualities. About the only thing I don't like about the 700 is the j lock.

I've got a ruger 77 mk2 heavy target in 22-250 and I love it. Everything I've shot has grouped under an inch. I've tried 2 different factory loads and handloads with 7 different bullets. Match hp's give me .5 to .75. I could improve but can't find the time to work up new loads especially when the accuracy is already fine. They have a 2 stage trigger that is just awesome too. I really like it a lot.

I actually like rem's but the one I looked at just didn't seem to fit me very well. Thats really the only reason I went ruger.

I really don't think you can go wrong with either choice. Both should be very accurate. My suggestion would be to go handle one of each. Dry fire them to check how they feel to you.

You may want to look at the win coyote. It is the best looking varmint rig out there. Stainless barrel, blue reciever, laminate stock. It's a shooter too. If I had it to do all over again that'd be the way I'd go just for the weight factor alone. My buddy got one and it's just awesome.

Good luck.

Two great rifles,I had the VLS and it was sweet.I lightned the trig and reloaded some rounds for it that it loved.Awesome gun all the way.Kinda miss mine..
I had a ruger all weather stainless with the three way safety if i remember correctly. Trig sucked and wasnt up on it very much. But they are greta guns also i hear..

700 VLS and never look back. So much more to offer than the Ruger in the form of accessories and ability to perform much better with custom work.

I have a Ruger77 MKII Target in 22PPC(1993 vintage) and love it! It has been my favorite long range coyote gun for years now. The trigger does have "takeup" before hitting release but for benchrest shooting it's light and sweet. I also have several Rem 700's in custom configurations that are nice, too. They don't shoot much better than the Ruger and my 12yr old daughter has even won competitions with it(the Ruger). I usually carry a Ruger M77 Standard in .223 when in closeup hunting cover. Very light, fast handling gun and it fits me perfect!
The three way safety on the Ruger allows you to open the bolt and eject a round while in the mid safety position which is great!

Now that said, I have to agree with "SteveM"... the Rem 700 is hard to beat for aftermarket accessories and custom smithing. You really need to get both in hand and see which fits best! Merry Christmas!!!! Nikonut /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Of those choices I'd take the vls anyday. For another option i'd look at the savave 12 models with the accu-trigger their suppose to be the most accurate out of the box. I'd love one in a 204.

Love my VLS 22-250 but like zorro said. Don't pass on looking at the Savage line. They are making an excellent gun these days. I also lightened the trigger on the gun and it will drive em.

I say go for the Ruger. I have this one myself

Ruger M77 VT, and I promise the gun will outshoot me. I can get .5 groups no problem, and I'd say there are people that could get it to do better than I can. I can hit pennies with it all day long at 100 yards, and consistently take squirrels with it at 200 yards. Can't complain about it one bit.

sqrle1, what part of swpa you from? I'm about 50 miles south of Erie. I'v hunted turkeys down in beaver (some real monsters down there).

I have a old ruger 77 in 6mm, I will likely die with it, I purchased a lvsf earlier this year in 223, Loved the rifle, it was light, fast, and good looking, But I had more problems with it than you can shake a stick at. I had put a new trigger in it, had to do some stock clearence work, still it didnt want to shoot consistant 1" groups, reloads or factory! It needed bedded, I wasnt going to put another red cent into it, I got rid of it for a micro hunter that shoots just as good right out of the box, It may be awhile before I buy another Remmy, You might want to look at the Tikka line, I like that T-3, I hear they shoot too.

The VLS hands down. I through mine in a HS precison stock and have gotton groups as small as .0 with 70g Nosler balistic tips and can clover leaf 90g balistic tips and 90g Seirra FMJs. Of course, these are all reloads. The Remington hands down has way more aftermarket options and the parts are normaly cheaper.
