Rem 700 VTR Question ??

I am looking into buying the VTR chambered in the 22-250. I have a few questions and I am hoping to get some feedback from anybody that might have one.
I have read in some of the gun reviews that even with the ported barrel it is not any louder than a non ported barrel.
I have also read in some gun forums that it is as loud as any other ported barrel.
This will be my main coyote rifle but I dont want to have to worry about my ears ringing after every shot on a stand.

I also read that they made a non-ported 24 inch barrel in this model and sold it only thru cabelas stores.. I havent been able to confirm that on yet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.. also any insight on the TC Venture also in the 22-250

Thanks

I got a friend who has one and they are loud. at the range i will wear ear plugs but when we are out calling or spot and stalk since it is usually wide open it isnt as loud as it is at the range.

I do not have a VTR in 22-250 but i do have one in .223. It is a little louder than my other rifles in .223. But i do not notice the difference when hunting with it. Maybe at the range, but I use ear-pro every time I shoot at the range. My buddy was shooting his VTR 22-250 a couple weeks ago at my range and didn't complain about noise. Maybe others have more experience with ported barrels but I don't think its going make your ears ring any more than any other rifle without using ear-pro. JMHO

Chase7,
How accurate is the VTR compared to your other 223's. The ported barrel was my biggest concern with the increase in noise. I also wear ear protection while at the range, just don't want to while hunting coyotes.

I don't have one, but ported barrels are loud if that is a concern. Remington makes way to many other options to go with in 22-250 to get hung up on a ported barrel, unless you just want one. The stocks on those are junk as well. JMO2.

My VTR so far favors 60grn sierras. I've gotten under MOA at 100yds with it. Not under 1/2 MOA thou. I'd say it shoots very well. I am considering either having the factory trigger worked or dropping in a aftermarket more user friendly trigger. I think my groups open up a little bit due to the hard trigger pull. I have not ever put a scale on the trigger, I do not currently own one. My other rifles are savages and all are model 10's. Can't complain about the way they shoot out of the box. I do like the feel of my VTR vs. Savage stock a little better. I know some people say the VTR stock sucks but mine seems to be fine. Remington seems to be hit or miss with there quality control. My buddies 22-250 VTR was giving him troubles when trying to get it to even group at first. He was trying all kinds of loads for it. He told me he ended up changing the factory scope bases out for better ones and that seemed to fix the problem. Something about the factory ones just were not square to the barrel or action. Not sure I never had this issue but as stated Remington seems to be hit or miss lately. If you like the VTR and they fit you I don't see were you can go wrong. Try other rifles out and see how they feel too. I'm considering jumping on the Tikka band wagon like the feel of the T3's. Oh yeah got another buddie that has a .308 VTR and he loves it. He is stationed in Alaska and has gotten a couple Caribous and his first Moose this year. Living the dream...

Sorry probably didn't answer your question. To compare the VTR to my savages, I'd say the savage shoots better but it has a better trigger and probably a little better stock as far as accuracy goes. But you could up grade a trigger pretty easy if it dosn't shoot good enough for you. Not sure how easy it is to get a different stock for VTR's. They have a one of a kind barrel. Help this helps you on your decision...

Het thanks for the input... I know there are alot of different options for the 22-250 out there. The VTR grabbed my attention, but the price did also. not sure if I want to dump around 700 bucks for a rifle when there are cheaper options that can shoot just as well. If the gun is well worth the money then I dont have a problem paying as long as it is a shooter.

I have the model with the 24 inch barrel in 22-250 that I got from Cabelas a while back. It shoots pretty well with 52gr Berger match varmint hovering around 1/2 inch groups give or take.

I have the VTR in 22-250 and it's definitely louder then the version with no ports but the recoil is quite a bit less to me.

Mines a shooter but it took a while to find what it liked. I put a Timney trigger and a B&C stock on it. It's my main groundhog gun and my goto rifle for just about any varmint here in VA.

This design gets a bad rap from quite a few people because of it's polarizing appearance with the triangular barrel. Resale sucks on them as a result so if you're buying a new one, plan on owning it a while to get your moneys worth. If you're buying one at a handy price, then you should be good to go.

I hope my opinion helps and good luck!

I have a VTR 223 in a Desert Recon. I really like this gun. It has a great feel to it, and it's been my go to coyote gun over the last 3 seasons. The ported barrel is LOUD.

I removed mine because I liked the gun so much, but hated ringing ears. Removal of the port is simple because the crown of the barrel is not touched by port removal. With 27grs of H4895(C), and 52gr Sierra Hp's, I can get this gun to shoot just under 1" groups.

I got one last winter in 308 :

This thing at the end of the barrel, stop any muzzle jump, its working (video) but yes its louder.
the real barrel length is 19.5 inch, the freebore was .236" with a 165 Bal-tip/ COL= 3.036".
Keeping the runout under 0.002 average accuracy for 5 rounds was 1 MOA + ....
Long story short, I sold it and bought a Tikka T3 Varmint ( 308 )
Thats another story.....

If you do not use hearing protection even when hunting you will ruin your hearing. Period!
It will happen quicker with the ported barrels, but will happen with all barrels.

This is not new news. Even a 22LR will cause hearing loss with every shot. If you want hearing loss and tinninitis, shoot without protection, your choice.

Heres 2 video
first one with the VTR

2nd one with the Tikka T3 Varmint SS

not the same shooter, but hopefully...will give you an idea.
