Remington 1100 questions

I have an old remington 1100 that I picked up in a trade as my first shotgun. It is kind of beat up, but I really like the gun and want to make some improvements. I am just about finished restoring the stock and fore end and now I think it is time to move on to the barrel. It came with a fixed full choke, but I want to get it cut to accept screw in chokes. I would also like it to have a vent rib on it. Would it be more cost effective to buy a new barrel or take it to a gunsmith in order to get these changes done? If buying another barrel is a better option where could I find a decently priced barrel?

You would be better to buy an after market barrel. If you don't a vent rib it is going to cost a pretty penny to have one. Plus most shops that I checked into will charge you between 75-100 for the choke install.

Where can you find after market barrels for them? I have looked and looked but I cant come up with anything. Nothing, but used remington barrels and they are still super expensive.

A GS might be a good place to look. I have a Rem. 11-87 SP,
that came with a 26" Rem. Choke barrel. I wanted a fully
rifled 21" barrel, and had to buy that full price($220 at the
time) from Cabelas, or some place like that. When I wanted a
21" smooth bore with Rem. Choke, for buckshot, I started
checking the local gun shows, and found one for $150 with a
rifled extended choke. I traded the choke back for $15, so
the deal was done for $135. It just happened to be an SP
finished barrel, so it even matched.

If you are
looking for a 26" Rem. Choke Rem. 1100 barrel, they should
be easy to find, although a used one may take a bit of luck
to find. Many fixed choke non-vent rib Rem. 1100 barrels have
been replaced by Rem. Choke Vent Rib after market barrels, but
not many the other way around.

The barrel on the old 1100/870 are basically to small to have the good choke tube threads cut. Thinwall is the only option and they are small leadshot only type of choke. Buy a new barrel Or just use what you have. Remcoke barrels are easy to find. Hard to pay for, with most over $200. All 12ga 1100 will work with 3" remchoke barrels. Just avoid the 3" heavy turkey type loads if you are using a non-magnum 1100.
