Remington 1187 Premier

What's your guys experiences with a Remington 1187 Premier? Pros and cons please. Have an opportunity to pick one up in a trade. Never owned an auto loader before so need some direction. Thanks

I have one. It seems to be a pretty good shot gun. I don't shoot it much but haven't had any problems. A few rounds of skeet and dove hunting and no problems with the gun. I suck but its not the guns fault.

In my experience, this is a solid shotgun. I have a 11-87 SP, and it has had thousands of rounds of magnum steel shot through it. No problems. You will want to get an extra rubber gas seal, for the magazine tube. Other than that, keep it clean, including the bolt return spring in the stock, and it will run well. A friend's son, shot a 11-87 Premier through college, on a trap team, to the nationals, a number of years, with no problems. I have a brother, and two waterfowl hunter friends that have them, and they have been rock solid reliable, as well. Like I said, just keep them clean, and they will cycle. IMHO the 11-87 was the last good shotgun Remington made. Flame Suit on!

Squeeze

Squeeze, pretty much nailed it. I'll add that for me it's a bit heavy and chunky in the forearm. I've always liked both the 1100 & 1187 and have owned several over the years but never seem to hang on to one. The Benelli and Beretta guns always displace the Remington's.

I will echo the above comments, I have had my 11-87 Premier since around 1990 and it has shot several thousand rounds with never a hiccup. The semi-auto sucks up the recoil very well and I have no plans to replace it any time soon.

I did replace my gas seal right after I bought my shotgun, used. I don't know that it really needed it, just figured the last guy didn't and didn't want failures in the field. Shoots like a dream, no problems at all.........with the gun. LOL

I have a 11-87 I have been using since around 1992 or 1993. It is my dove, quail, chukar, pheasant, duck, goose and coyote gun.

I had one extractor break and that is the only problem I have had.

I shot untold thousands of rounds on 5 stand and sporting clays with a 11/87 premiere. I wiped off the mag tube every couple of hundred rounds and inspected the gas seal. Never had a problem.

I have put a burris speed beade on the 11/87 now, and it is nothing short of amazing. I pick up birds quicker, and this Burris speed beade will also make up for stock fit because you sight it in just like a rifle scope.

A Non ported Carlson's turkey choke in this 11/87 shoots buckshot into 20" patterns at 40 yards, 00 and 000 buck are smaller patterns, 15"

I think that it is prudent to keep an extra gas seal in a little plastic bag in your shotgun case, they are dirt cheap on ebay.

I have two 11-87s. One Premier and one 30" SP. I have shot thousands of shells thru my Premier. And the only hicup was the o-ring one time. They are great shotguns and pretty easy to maintain. Keep a couple spare o-rings and piston rings available and you are good For a long time!
I dont think you will regret the 11-87.

I did get it. Haven't took it out to the field yet or done any pattern testing, but I did put a few rounds through it to function check it. It's very smooth. Used cheap low brass shells and no problems. First auto loader so I have nothing to compare it to but I like it.

I've been seeing a nice bobcat this year, gave it a pass with the 204, hoping to take it with the 11-87 and do a mount.

I've always liked how the 11-87 premier and the 1100 look I've been trying to buy an 80's 1187 that is in new condition from my dad for last 3 years he doesn't use it but must like it as well as he won't sell it

The one I picked up on this deal is in about perfect condition. Only has one little faint 1" long mark on the right side of the forearm. Can only see it in the right light. Rest of the gun is clean and nice. I got it with a full choke, a modified choke, and a hard case for a M&P 9 and some ammo. I don't know the age yet as I haven't looked it up but I'm more than pleased with its looks and performance.

Both my 11-87s are 1989 models.
Adam, what barrel length is yours?
Do you know what year it was made? You can translate the barrel date code if its the original barrel. The stamp is close to the receiver but on the opposite of the eiection port.

28" barrel. The date code on the barrel is EI so I assume 10/88 manufacture. It also has an 88 just slightly above the date code and a tad closer to the receiver, so that reaffirms my assumptions.

I guess the 11-87 is old technology compared to the new inertia-driven guns, but I love mine. I've had it about 16 years, fired thousands of rounds, and had zero issues. The o ring is still the original.
