Any reviews on this gun? I want a .17 hmr for plinking and shooting small game. And I want semiauto, any of you guys have experience with a Remington 597 in 17.hmr? I have a 597 in .22lr, and it's a good rifle.

Thanks

i had a heavy barrel 597, i had to send it back to remington because the saftey would only work about 1/3rd of the time, other than that i liked the gun alot the gun after remington sent it back had no issues at all Ron

I bought one in Nov. It's seen a lot of use in coon den calling and have taken 25 coons with it, (along with one coyote at 25 yards.) My only problem is the magazine. Some times you can load a full mag, and it will feed every one, next time it may not pickup the second or third round on a full mag. Loading 4 or 5 increases the odds of every round feeding. I read on another site that they suggested smoothing the sides of the follower and stretching the mag spring a little. Tried that and still on a full mag may get a failure to feed. I have a 2nd factory magazine that does the same thing. I plan on working on the magazine some more since I like the rifle. Haven't had any problems with the safety.

i had one that was a peace of crap.had to send it in three times because the scope mount would pull the treads out of the reciever just from shooting it.the mags are a joke.

most of the semi auto 22 mags and 17 hmr seem to have problems. Ruger couldn't get it right and I don't think remington has either. I would just stick with 22 LR or hm2 in semi auto . if you want a 22 mag or 17 hmr get a bolt gun. you can get a sako quad in any rimfire chambering for 500 bucks from whitakers. Its a serious tack driver.

maybe you could get a 10/22 and convert it to 17 hm2.

take a look at the thompson center semi auto rimfire aswell as cz.The hiden magazine in the stock on the TC is sweet.

I bought one in 22wmr back around 01-02 when remys quality was at its worst, and it was a turd never could group no better than 4"s at 100 yds tried every 22mag ammo they make. Even if it did the trigger was spongy and it was hard to clean. I traded for a savage with the super crisp adjustable accutrigger its the bull barrel stainless with syn stock model 93vss I think. Go with one of them or marlin makes one almost identical. BTW the 17 may shoot flatter but the down range energy is so low makes it un useable at the extended range also the wind has more than 1.5 times the effect on 17hmr than on 22wmr. just some thing to consider.

The 597's have given problems over the years.....but there ARE simple fixes to these rifles that make them reliable and good shooters. Check here: www.rimfirecentral.com for all of the info you need about that rifle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I've almost bought one of these several times until I read a new post. Can we do the fixes and send Remington the bill? Wouldn't that be nice.

Got my Dad one in 22lr for Christmas of '06. It shoots better than my stock 10/22. I like the feel as it feels like a full sized rifle. It really hasn't had feed issues that I know of. My 10/22 has one mag that always hangs about half way through the 10.

I'm still toying with trading the 10/22 and getting the 597. If they're both going to have feed issues (and I think they both probably will), I'd rather have the accuracy, better feel/balance, and easy of cleaning of the stock 597. There is more aftermarket stuff all the time for them, if you're into that.

No experience w/ it in .17.

I was looking at getting a 597 mag but I'm not convinced enough to drop any $$ on one. Another option may be the "accelerator" rifle but I don't have experience with them either.

Seems hard to find a good semi-auto .22 mag. Here is 2 options you might look at:

#1) A lever gun in .22 mag. Marlin, Ruger, Winchester and Henry all make em. Won't be as fast as a semi but won't be as slow as a bolt gun. Levers are also great woods bummin guns.

#2) stick with the 22LR and use CCI Velocitors. We have switched to using these for coon callin and they have enough thump to put coon down with body shots. Thats something I never thought I'd say about a .22 LR. CCI claims that they are "enough" for coyote but I think they are on crack. Although if thats what I had in my hands when one popped up, I'd be pullin the trigger. 1430 fps and a very well (Speer Gold Dot?) designed 40 gr. HP really helps the .22 LR.

You have mag issuse with a 10/22. It either has too cleaned or needs a new spring. The waxy 22 bullets are the enemy with those mags. If shot over 50,000 rounds + in mine. Just needs a little cleaning once in awhile.

I use mine quit a bit. The mags are crappy. I only put 5 rds at a time in the mag and have no problems. I might need a new mag though. I free floated the barrel and improved the accuracy. It shot decent before, but the free float made a noticeable difference.

thats what i was thinking. my 10/22 has never jammed without good reason in 2,500 rounds. I shoot subsonics mostly. Only time its ever jammed is shooting bulk garbage or it was real dirty. My friend has a magazine that fails every time in both our guns but i'm sure he has dropped it in the dirt. Try cleaning it out. Some bullets like cci subsonic hollow point may also shave off little tiny bits of lead as the bullet scrapes the front of the mag. They fall inside the mag and cause problems.

You do have to keep the action clean as with any semi-auto.Mine would start to stick after about 500 rounds when i first got it. I found the right amount of oil makes a big difference. Some guns like more oil then others you might need to experiment. Mine runs best if I don't put oil anywhere in the action except on the bolt and just a tiny bit on the rod. I haven't had a single jam in atleast 1,000 rounds.

polishing the bolt, rod, and trigger group can help too.The bolt rides across the top of the hammer when reseting the trigger. Subsonic ammo works better if the face of the hammer is smooth.

I hate my 10/22 it jams up at least once every time I run through the magazine... Its brand new the gun itself maybe has 50 rounds in it. I have two 597 one broke but im working on fixing it. Im considering maybe trading off the 10/22 or something.... I hate to do it cause you don't get anything for them.

Seriously...there are a bunch of nice, knowledgeable guys over there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I didn't read this whole post, so excuse me if someone's already mentioned this, but I'm pretty sure Remington dropped the HMR from the 597 line this year. Check out Remington's web site.
