Remington 597 22 Mag.

I have a 597 in 22 Mag that wont chamber. I shoot one shot and nearly every time when I NEED a second shot the bolt hangs open and wont feed the next round. It seems like when I shoot at a target its fine. If I want it to act up so i can try to see whats going on it wont fail. I have to take the magazine out and mess with the bolt and it will finally close. Once in awhile when it does take the next round I cant get it to go back on safe. I have to take the mag out, open the chamber and then it will go on safe. Ive read they have mag problems. Ive tried several different ones and 3 kinds of ammo. I have a 597 in HMR and it has never failed to chamber or jamb in any way. I can rip through a mag just as fast as I can with no issues. Ive shot it probably 200 times. The other day it blew up like they are known for so its on its way to Remington to be rebarreled in 22 Mag. I know they are a cheap made gun and everyone is going to tell me to buy a Magnum Reaserch. There has to be something wrong that can be fixed. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Is everything clean and dry, have you looked up in the chamber with the bolt out and seen if it was dirty where it chambers the shell into the barrel, duffy!! Dont know why the darn thing just wont work like its supposed to.

I had it completely apart today and it was surprising clean. I cleaned it anyway and wiped off excess oil. Tried it and the same thing. I guess all I can do is send it to Remington and have them fix it. No telling what it will cost.

Before k took it apart and cleaned it, the bolt would hang open. When I shot it afterwards the bolt did t hang open but it does seem to be a single shot now. After I shoot it it won't fire again but it has picked up the next round and its in the barrel. It seems like its not cocking it because I can't pug the safety on. It looks lime the bolt is coming back far enough that it should be cocking it but its clearly not.

Do you have any idea if the rod screws were misadjusted before if that could have caused the bolt to be held opened? Thanks for the help. I'm guessing I have them to tight now.

maybe take to a good local gunsmith. I like mine and have not had any problems until the roll pin on the load lever (of the action) came out. Luckily found the lever and will take to local gunsmith. FUn gun...but only about 200 rounds fired...not extremely excited about the quality.

I have had a 597 mag for many years. Killed lots with it. It is a cheaply built rifle. Mine has only failed to fire a few times out of thousands of rounds. Never could figure out why. It would push the round into the chamber but not cock the rifle. The safety would also not work. I have not had any trouble with mine in a while. Next time I will buy a better quality 22 mag. Mine also works better with 5 rounds in the magazine instead of 8.

Had the 597 in 17HMR and fought with 3 different factory magazines, sometimes it would fire all 8 rounds and other times jam on 2 or 3 round. Started loading only 5 rounds to a magazine and didn't have the problem. Sold the rifle after about 3 years and went with the CZ512 in 22 mag.

I've had my LS-HB for quite a few years and the only issue I've found is if I load the mag to full capacity of 8, it tends to jam/stovepipe....if I only load 5, shoots as it should.

I too agree with the poster above that mentioned RimFireCentral.com a lot of good people there willing help.

I learned from RFC to lightly tighten the guide rod screws EQUALLY,, as well as many other tips and tricks.
These actions seem to get dirty real quick, so the drier/less oily you keep it the better off you should be.

You're rods need to be just barely snug, almost loose. It may or may not help. I have one in 22mag that's the most picky rifle I've ever seen. The rods have to be torqued perfectly and need to be polished, it HATES being over oiled (but still needs a good amount), the 3rd generation metal mags are a must (they have a circle with a "10" in it on the bottom), and it has to be perfectly clean. Pulling out the secondary trigger spring will help your accuracy as well. Mine shoots ok(ish) but as others have said anything more than 5-6 rounds in the mag and it stovepipes or just constantly FTF. rimfire.com has a whole forum on making 597s work right. The best fix for the 597 comes from the Czech Republic, it's called a CZ!
