Does anyone have any experience with the Remington 597 in the .17 HMR configuration? One of our better sporting goods store has one and I am considering buying it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Any info, both good and/or bad would be appreciated. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The good news is: There's LOTS of good news! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The bad news is: There's LOTS of bad news, too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

This rifle has been the PLAGUE to some owners, and a BLESSING to others. Why? I have NO idea. Seems that some folks have fired 1,000's of rounds with no problems whatsoever, and other owners can't get theirs to fire more than a mag without a problem.

There's lots of info about this rifle available @ www.rimfirecentral.com

Good Luck! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I've got a 597 LS in 17 HMR. It's accurate and works well. No FTF/FTE either. This isn't the HB model, just a sporter weight barrel on it. It can be converted to 22 Mag with a barrel change too. I'm very pleased with mine. MI VHNTR

Rusty, I watched my brothers Smith take one apart the other day and repair it.
To say I am not impressed with its construction is an understatement. The Smith seems to work on alot of them also.
Ron,the Smith, told me the only thing he does to Rugers is trigger jobs and fix home gun smith errors.
never owned one tho

You will hear a lot of bad things about the 597 but the majority of the complaints are referring to the 22LR verison. Most of the problems are related to the plastic magazine which has been replaced with a metal one. I had no problems with my 597-17hmr but my son had a fail to eject on the first round. This problem was solved by adjusting the guide rod screws to be only finger tight. Some seem to come from the factory and from gunsmiths way to tight. To make a 10/22 a super shooter you have to do a lot of modifications but with the 597 all you have to do is replace the hammer for about $30. For the guy that said all you have to do is look inside a 597 and you won't be impressed, keep this in mind. The 597 was easily converted to a 17hmr by Remington with just a barrel change. While Ruger still does not have enough confidence in their 10/22 mag action to convert it to the 17 hmr.
Here is a group shot with my 597 17hmr that had a barrel change from a 22 mag and the custom hammer installed. (The hammer change will lighten and clean up the trigger.)
There isn't to many options available if you want a semi auto 17hmr, the only other one is the Volquartsen at $1000.

I've never shot the 17hmr, but I bought the 597 22lr in 1998 and have never had a single problem with it. Can't say the same fo the 10/22 I bought the same time. You do not have to do anything to the 597 to get it to shoot, mine will give me 1/2" 10 shot groups at 50yrds out of the box.Ruger has a 10/17hmr if you want one, be prepared to replace the barrel, trigger, stock and most everthing if you want it to shot straight and be reliable.

Ruger's 10/17 has never hit the market even though they advertised it. They have since pulled all ads and removed from their website.

You could be right, been reading about 10/17hmr in rimfire centrail but they could be aftermarket barrels.

They are DEFINITELY 10/22MAGs that have had barrel changes. Ruger has NEVER produced the 10/17HMR for public consumption, although they did a premature marketing fiasco a little while back. It was in their newer catalogs, but has been removed. What the future holds....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Who knows?

The one I saw was 22 LR, it has these two flimsey "guide rods" that go all the way thru the action and guide the bolt, the smith told me he had never seen two rods that were straight. I have no idea what the proper name of the "guide rods" are but that is what they do. everything in there looked and felt loose, and I'm sorry, cheap. I must confess I never assumed that there would be much of a difference between a 17 and a 22 or 22 mag. or even much thought, I dont have much use for either 22 and less for the 17.
My 10/22 I bought for 37.50 in 1963, maybe 64 I think, first one I ever saw. money I earned thinning sugar beets, I was 12. still shoots really well. many thousands of rounds.

I have to agree with SamSpade.

Most of what you hear about the 597's is the early 22 version. Remington fixed the problems - an extractor problem and the plastic mags were replaced with metal ones.

My 597 17 HMR shoots like a dream. No problems at all. It shoots the 20 gain pill from Horady into under an inch groups at 100 yards all day long. No failure to feed or extract. Has a real solid feel to it also. I put the VQ Hammer in mine too.
