Remington 6 1/2 primers in a 357 Mag

Primers being what they are and trying to load for my new 357, I read on another forum where a Remington 6 1/2 primer will work. Supposedly they are very similar to a SP magnum primer. I loaded 10 rounds using the 6 1/2 SRP with 18 grains of 296 and a 140 grain XTP. Haven't shot them yet but hoping they will not blow me and the pistol up. I have kinda grown attached to my fingers.

Reason for using the small rifle primers is I have 50 small pistol primers and a full brick of the 6 1/2's and nothing to really use them in.Does anyone see an issue using them?

Never done it, so no advice coming from me about substituting primers. I will say this, W296/H110 has a narrow window that it operates in and it can spike pressure very quickly. W296/H110 is not a powder that tolerates downloading or going an extra little bit higher when it first shows pressure. Hodgdon says 17.1 grains to start and 19.0 as the top load with a 140 gr. XTP bullet. If I was going to substitute a rifle primer for a pistol primer I think I would have started with the beginning suggested load.

Well I haven't shot them yet so I'll set them aside and load a few more with a lighter charge weight. A guy on Accurate shooter said he used the 6 1/2 in 5 different pistols was all I had to go on. I was hoping a few might chime in here if they had tried them. Thanks Guys!!

SRPs can be used for pistol ammo without much thought. They're not the same as SPPs, but close enough you'll likely never know the difference at typical pistol distances. Supposedly certain striker fired pistols could result in light strikes but my Glocks did fine. Rem 6 1/2s fill a very narrow need, and are not recommended for 223 etc. Might as well blast them. Pics or it didn't happen.

The Small Rifle primers have a thicker cup than the SPs. Some lightly tuned revolvers won't set them off as well as some of the smaller striker fired semi autos. I know nothing as to the powders and loads you are using. I use mostly Herco, Red Dot, Blue Dot & 2400 in the .357 mag depending on bullet weight and style (cast vs jacketed).

I had 10 rounds loaded up with the 6 1/2 primer, 18 grains of 296 and a 140 grain XTP. I shot all 10 @ 50yds. Accuracy was just Meh but the primers looked better than the 20 or so factory rounds that I shot. No pressure signs what so ever. But, I went by Bass Pro and they had CCI SMP primers for $8.99 per hundred and no limit so I bought a brick. After tax and military disc the were only $80. Even though the 6 1/2's work, I think I'll play it safe and use what I should be using.

I did buy a B-Square scope mount and a 2X Leupold. My eyes and open sight just don't get along. I hope I can get a good load that is accurate to at least 50yds. I'm thinking that will be my max yardage with a handgun.
