Remington 700.22-250 SPS

Looking for opinions on a Remington SPS .22-250. Bass Pro has them on sale for $579. I would use it mainly for woodchucks and prairie dogs.
I read some reviews and guys said the stocks are cheap. I will shot handloads through it.

Price seems high for what you get. I’d look used for $400-475. I actually do own that rifle, though only the action is original.

If I was looking for a current manufacturer 22-250, I’d look elsewhere. That’s not to say that you couldn’t make it work, new trigger and all.

I have one. It never shot great with factory ammo or trigger. Shoots around 1/2 moa now with hand loads and a timney 510

The stock is no worse than the RAR or comparable. Savage, or whatever. In the end I would still rather own the Remington 700. The sps is good to go. I have bought 4 or 5 of them. Some have been upgraded, some not, but they all shoot great.

I purchased the Stainless version a couple years ago when I was looking for this cartridge in a VSSF version. The VSSF was going for about $1100, I paid $480 for the SPS at the time. The trigger was horrible and the stock flimsy. Out of the box the rifle was good for groups of 3/4" to 1".

The first week I ordered a Timney trigger and a B&C Medalist stock. These items got the groups down to 1/2" and it is a joy to shoot now.

The SPS is a decent rifle but keep in mind the stock and trigger prevent it from doing what it is capable of shooting. But, you can change these items after you buy the gun.

Before I bought the Rem and upgraded the stock and trigger, I would peruse some $900-$1000 rifle options since that is about what you would have in the 700 in the end. Either way good luck.

What do you suggest? Now I'm also kicking the idea around of a .204 instead of the .22-250??

I'd take a chance on one but not for that price.
I bought a 223 for a donor for $369 a few years ago. I shot it in factory form to see if the barrel was worth using. It was pretty accurate so I had my smith tune up the action and set the barrel back, recrown, and rechamber to 222. Then I put an old Walker trigger I had on hand in it and bedded it in a Boyds Classic. After selling the stock, trigger, and bottom metal (I prefer a blind magazine) I have a little over $500 in a rifle built the way I like that shoots right with my Pac Nor barreled 700 and 527.

It's the top one in this pic.

I bought all of mine at the local wally-mart. $400-425.

There is one there now in 243 win for $425. Slap that in a boyd's with a little bedding....... there you go.
