I was at the gun smiths the other day and he had a remington 700 5R in 223 with a 1 in 9 twist on the wall, does anybody here own one or shot one, if so what are some of the pros and cons to this gun. Kinda thinking about buying it but not much info out there on the thing. thanks

I hate to say this again....But, what will you use it for?

They are a great weapon, they come with a stock that is of enough buil quality that you don't have to run out and replace it immediately. However it's not the most ergonomic stock for shooting prone. Exceptional accuracy. Typically a fair price for a good shooter.

The cons are. For a carry rifle, it's a toad. X mark triggers are generally considered undesireable.

I think they are pretty nice rifles if you don't mind the weight in the field.

I'll be mostly shooting paper and maybe the odd coyote but i have 2 swifts for that. the weight is not a problem. I have 2 Timney triggers ordered that I was going to put on my other 700's but I might put one on this one if I get it. Thanks

I have a .308 version and they are accurate. My only negative is that I don't like the grip on the stock, but slowly getting use to it. My shoots very well from the bench and can hit a penny 9 out of 10 times at 100yds. Could probably do 10 for 10 with more practice.

I would say go for it if its what you want. I picked up a Rem Tactical in .223 for about half as much and with adding a chassis system I think I have a better rifle for cheaper. IMHO.

I have a 5R in .308 also. the rifle i have is ridiculously acurate. it shoots 5 shot one holers at 200 yds all day long. i own many 700's both stock and wildcat calibers and my 5R was worth every penny. i would buy the .223 5R in a minute. had my stock trigger reworked to 1.2 lbs so the timney isnt necessary.

I got the X mark trigger down on a new 700 Sendero to 2 1/2 lbs easy....depends on your application and needs.

I have a few jewels, shilen, and Hart triggers, also.

The 5r refers to the way the rifling is cut as much as anything else. Instead of the normal lands and grooves the rifling is radiused hence the 5r. I think Obermeyer perfected this type of rifling, but the russians might have started it. I may be way off on that one but I know Obermeyer was the big one on the rifling. Most are very accurate guns.

Far as I know, Boots developed 5R rifling. It supposedly reduces fouling and also aids in preventing bullet blow up in fastly twisted tubes. Both very good attributes.

Anyhooo---Rem 5R rifles are known shooters......
