Remington 700 "Alpha 1"

Went in to Tulsa today. One of the larger stores has reps from a lot of different gun and scope manufacturers there every year. I forgot that this was the week-end they were here. Anyway, there were two new Remington 700 "Alpha 1" rifles in the racks. One was 308 and the other 6.5CM.

Things I noticed-

Fluted barrel-nice
Diamond fluted bolt-nice as well
straight bolt handle- also nice
bolt release on the side of the action- very nice, I like that a lot
stock- some type of composite- Meh, its solid but rather plain jane IMO
Price-$1841 and tax- not so nice. I looked and looked and worked the bolt a few times and just didn't see close to two grand for this rifle. Did I miss out on something hidden? It just didn't have that much more going for it than a regular Remington 700 to me.

Anything special about the trigger?

Stock have bedding block or anything special?

Are the barrels hand lapped or anything different than what goes on standard models?

I looked at these a long time ago on the website but don’t recall any details. For the price, I would say a good smith could work up a rifle and have something better for similar money. That’s a pure assumption though, and I have no worked/custom rifles to base that guess off of.

While it has 700 in the title, it is a whole new animal that cures all the ills that has plagued the 700 the last few years.

If I was in the market for a new gun, this is near the top of my list.

I guess I should do some more research. It was a nice rifle for sure. I just wasn't aware of the changes other than what I could see. I did like the new bolt and side release. It gave the action a more custom look.

Copied from Remington website:

The Model 700 Alpha 1 showcases modern key features that are second to none. A tool-less takedown firing pin assembly, round receiver, fluted 5R barrel, threaded muzzle, precision ground recoil lugs, Elite Hunter Timney straight trigger, AG composite carbon fiber stock, and an array of other custom features that will maximize the performance of the present-day ammunition.
Round receiver
Precision ground recoil lug
Enlarged ejection port
One-piece spiral fluted bolt body with changeable bolt handle
Tool-less firing pin disassembly
Sleek external bolt release on the left side of receiver
11-degree target crown
3 lb. Elite Hunter Timney straight trigger
AG composite carbon fiber stock with Pachmayr recoil pad
Aluminum Oberndorf style trigger guard
Picatinny rail mount, 8-40 scope thread screws
5/8 x 24 Threaded Muzzle = .243 Win, .7MM-08 Rem, .270 Win, 30-06 SPRG, 7MM Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 6.5 Creedmoor, &.308 Win
1/2 x 28 Threaded Muzzle = .223 Rem & 22-250 Rem
Longer internal magazine box (for longer case lengths)
Compatible with older 700 stocks but will need inletting for the longer internal magwell

Looks basically like a custom rifle other than not having a blueprinted action.
Seems like a steal for $1800…the stock alone is around $600

I def have at least $2000 in my custom 700 .25-06 and don’t have several of these features. Granted it was a budget build and a friend did all the machining.

I did a little more reading and granted its a nice rifle but I'm still not 100% sold on it. In reading, several of the parts are third party but an improvement over factory Remington. What I didn't find was accuracy reviews. Plenty of reviews to tell you about all the bells and whistles but I want to see groups. I didn't read an accuracy guarantee either. Before I spend $1841 and tax, I want to see some accuracy reviews.

$$$$ have no direct correlation to accuracy. Case in point a $1700 BAR, in the "inherently accurate .308 Win., that will only shoot 1.25-1.5 moa with 1 bullet (110 gr. varmageddon).

TOTALLY agree.

Like in another discussion about the Ruger #1. It's a +/- $2000 rifle that might shoot MOA or might not.

It’s still going to be a mass production crap shoot, I do have faith in the 5R barrels, but that’s years ago when they were known accurate. Who knows how the “New” Remington does with them.
I did purchase a new 700 sps Varmint spring 2022 in 308. I sold it to a friend for his son to hunt deer with and never fired it. It seemed good, def not as nice the older rifles. I recall it took a lot of cleaning in the action and Mag box but ended up feeling quite smooth. I never got to hear about its accuracy unfortunately
