I'd sure thing about the 204 Ruger or 17 Rem for a fox gun if you plan on harvesting the hides.
I've been a Remingtin guy for lots of years and have a Remington VLS for one of my varmint guns. Today I'd recommend one of the CZ 527 Varmints in 204 Ruger over the Remington for both cost and accuracy.
Thanks for your reply. We don't harvest the pelts over here, just shoot the foxes to keep the lambs and game birds safe. I like the .223 cal, it ruins a foxes entire day!
I looked at a VLS yesterday, nice light rifle for walking around. The VL SS I chose has the new Remington trigger in it, I dry fired one and it's a great improvement!
If you are a Remington fan you might also look at the LVSF (Light Varmint Stainless Fluted) if carrying-weight is a consideration. They are extremely light weight. Mine is a 221 Fireball, I posted a pic of it with the new stock on another thread in this forum. The new weight is 8.25 pounds. I wouldn't suggest the Fireball if ammo availability is a problem but it also comes in 223. I handload so ammo is not a problem and I am fond of the less popular calibers.
Bob's suggestion of a CZ is a good one too. Mine is a 243 Win Full Stock model 550. I keep that one with the original iron sights.
Both are very accurate guns and either will "ruin a foxes day".
I like the 700 LV SF in 223. I have had several version of the 700 and I love the LV SF. It will shoot 1/4" groups all day. I have 22-250s,220 swifts,243s,260s,and I usually go back to my 223s. I currently have 4 of the 223s. 1 700 LV SF, 1 ruger stainless, 1 bushmaster predator, and 1 WOA. The Rem does not like 62 up bullets though.

Seriously...you don't really mean that do you...? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
I doubt it since even, cost is no object benchrest rifles, shot by the best wind and mirage dopers in the world can not do that.
Well maybe a new super human has evolved in the last two weeks?????
My custom rifles won't do it...just didn't know if I had gotten screwed /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif .....If all it took to shoot the groups mentioned was buying an LVSF...I would have bought 6....grin.
One or 2, 1/4" groups don't make a 1/4" rifle. Anyone can fool around with any rifle and shoot 1 or 2 good groups in the course of a day, or a week. It takes a real accurate rifle to shoot 1/4" groups back to back. I think a rifle that will average 1/4" with 2 or 3 groups on one target qualifies as a 1/4" rifle. The rest is just another nice group shot by an average shooting rifle. That's why I never post a target with one group on it. It only proves that was the best group that rifle ever shot. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.
I have seen some very hot Remington rifles, I even own a couple of them, so don't count them out.
