Remington 700 VLS .22-250

Guys,
A friend called and said he may sell his 700VLS. He asked if I would like to shoot it for a while to see if I liked it. I'm going to try it as I load for a No.1V in that caliber.
I'd like to know if anyone hunts coyotes / foxes with one? Haven't seen it yet but it has a Vortex scope on it.I just read where they have a 26" barrel and I'm wondering if the rifles too long or awkward to carry?
Are they accurate?
Thank you in advance for your consideration and help.

Those VLS's had a good reputation. If it's priced right I wouldn't fart around, they aren't behind every tree anymore.....

22-250 can be a bit messy on fox, not much can whoop one for coyotes.

They aren't a lightweight, that's for sure. Highly unlike you'll be busting brush with it, so the 26" isn't that big of deal. You can always have a gunsmith circumcise it.

I didn't hunt coyotes or fox with mine very much, and don’t even consider it for that anymore, but it’s very accurate, and hammers groundhogs. Mine wears a VX3 4.5-14x50 LR, a Harris S25-C, padded leather sling, and weighs in at about 12.4lbs with shells in the magazine. Not much of a walkabout rifle for me. If you’re not walking far and calling to vast open areas, it would be great! I wouldn’t let it pass, especially if it’s the early version stock with the black tipped fore end and checkering vs smooth plain laminate newer ones.

Guys,
I picked up the rifle tonight, excellent condition. Has a Vortex Viper 6.5X20X44 Scope.Weaver base and I believe the rings are Weaver . They’ve got 3 Allen screws on each side . .Scope has an adjustable objective. I’m not familiar with the Vortex brand at all. He also gave me 50 loaded rounds with 52 grain bullets. Th trigger is nice and crisp.
It doesn’t have a black forend tip .
What do you folks think?

Assuming its a wood stocked rifle? And assuming you got it for a decent price? Or should I say a fair price. I can't see any reason not to keep it and shoot it. The 52 grain bullets should work fine and if they do, I would see if I could get the reloading data from the guy that loaded them. I shoot 52 grain Bergers in both my 22-250AI and my straight 22-250. Very accurate in both rifles.

Fellows,
The rifle is heavy. As I said it's in really nice shape. The scope looks new. I'm getting a hip replacement in October; my hunting partner is my age and getting a shoulder replacement. We have a little over 100 acres to hunt so a half mile would be a long walk. If I hunt coyotes it would likely be in PA where I can sit without much walking.
Punching paper appeals much more to me than bingo!!
Seems like I'm talking myself into it, IF he decides to sell it right.

For me used factory rifles have the value of the action. As the factory stock, barrel and trigger usually degrade the accuracy potential. That said I have shot at least 1/2 doz of Rem varmint 22-250's, all would shoot under 1 inch group's with hand loads, and some factory loads. 40-52 gr bullets work well with the 1/14" twist.

I tonight I removed the stock . The action is bedded and about the first 4” of the barrel are glass bedded free floating the barrel.
If I get a chance I’m going to try and shoot it tomorrow.
I’m starting to think since i don’t have one I need a Remington model 700 VLS in my life !!!

I took mine a few times, but found it’s better suited for sitting and looking over fields for groundhogs. It’s too heavy for me to use for the way I predator hunt.

Most of my rifles are heavy barrels......except the ones I hunt with. In my youth, a heavy barrel wasn't a problem. Now that I'm in my "Golden" years (LOL), I go as light as possible. But I still love the heavy barrel rifles and shoot them the most, but off a bench.

This is an awesome Rifle, the cartridge on fox maybe not so much, but YES on the Remmy.

My first coyote rifle was and still is a vls 243. Sold off the stock years ago. I bedded it a few times before I sold it.. best groups were averaging a half inch.. Replaced it with a hs prescion stock. Same half inch grouping hand loads shot all in ONE hole. Looked like I missed the target with the other 2 shots. Added a timney trigger and a vx1V 4.5-14 40mm with a 30mm tube. I had it completely dipped in max1 at tarjack. The gun shoots one hole groups with 70 grain nosler ballistic tips. Don't use it much anymore. I prefer lighter rifles and shotguns for calling. It's the gun in my avatar. I wrapped it with camo tape for a few years before sending it in for dipping.

I've used it for a calling rifle for quite a few years. Shot countless coyotes, bobcats, hogs, varmints, and a mountain lion with it. Biggest issue I had is most my shots were almost point blank to 45 yards. Hard to pick up a moving animal at close range at 4.5x and swinging a large heavy rifle to boot. I bought the gun when I first started reloading back around 99'. I was a young buck and didn't mind the extra weight. Still don't mind carrying it but I'd rather use my short and light 1967 Remington 600 chambered in 243 now. Short, light, quick to swing, and with a lower powered optic. I have a custom trigger set a 1 1/4 pounds, barrel is floated, and the action is glassed. It shoots almost as tight as my VLS and is a joy to carry on my back while I'm toting a shotgun. Won't get rid of it for sentimental value. To many memories of predator hunting with it.

I've had a range of VLS rifles, 204, 223, and 22-250. All tack drivers.

From my notes: 50gr BT, REM 9 1/2, and H380 was the magic load I found for that 22-250.
