Remington 783Tactical

Rainy day so I went shopping for man toys. LOL, pawn shops and retail store that sell guns. Anyway, I stopped in Academy and they have a 783 Tactical in 223. It has a threaded 16" barrel. Price was like $350. Are they worth the money? Do they shoot good? I'm not saying I want one but they were decent looking and might try one later down the road.

I've been wondering the same exact things. Thanks for asking this. I'll be waiting to see what's said. . .
I'm assuming this line is direct competition for the Savage Axis and Ruger American Rifle.

Every report I have seen claims good accuracy. I feel they "feel" better than the other basic budget rifles available (Axis, Ruger American, etc) but that is subjective. The Tac model seems cool, and would be an inexpensive way to enter into a canned hunting rifle.

783's are a serious upgrade from a savage. Also, factory trigger can be taken apart and re sprung making it a sweet trigger indeed! Steel mag box. VERy quick lock time. Boyd stocks are a great upgrade.

I have bore scoped the barrel on 3 of the 783's, they are good barrels, far superior to some of their competition's....understatement.

Midway USA has had these for $339 in a variety of calibers from 223 to 308 for some time. I considered buying one in 6.5 Creed just for the hel1 of it but I've yet to do so.

I've heard they actually shoot pretty decent and $339 for a gun that comes with a threaded barrel and a detachable mag system that works well, seems like a pretty good deal. There aren't a lot of stock options for them so that kinda sucks but one of these things dropped into a Boyd's Pro Varmint stock would probably look pretty decent.

I was interested in the heavy barreled version a while back for a do all around cheap rifle. My sticking point was I couold get another tc venture for the same or less price and I dont think it's in the same league as the (very overlooked, underrated) Venture...I'd still like to try a 783 in 223 someday

In comparison, the 783 is heads and shoulders above. Pick up a 783, drop the magazine and hold it, you will be sold. The only thing that I don't like about the 783 is the plastic trigger guard.

Bore scoping three of the 783's, barrel inside looks better than the Venture. The Venture is way better than any of the Savages I have looked at of my cousins.

Stock options, go to boyd's.

Agreed! I'm really surprised someone hasn't produced an aftermarket metal trigger guard for these things yet. Maybe they have and I just haven't seen one.

I can't say I have bore scoped any of them but the Ventures mag is one of my favorite features, it has a body similar to a tikka mag and a metal spring loaded latch that makes a nice click when its into place and the [beeep] things bolt cycles and feeds like butter lol Im a big fan of them.
I do have an x7 which the 783 was made from and while it shoots well my savages do better and my venture will out shoot them both pretty handily. But it too has that [beeep] ugly molded in trigger gaurd.
I'd still like to give one of the 783 16"hb a try for a truck/camp gun as I think the American Ranch rotary mag is a huge pos and the 783 seems to have the better factory stock of the 2

PT&G makes an M5 type DBM metal.

To the best of my knowledge they come in four different configurations.

Short action small bolt face, short action standard bolt face, long action standard bolt face, and long action magnum bolt face.
