Remington 788 help

After a week long search I found 4 788's here in Iowa 3 -243's and 1 - 308 carbine. 3 of the 4 788's were at one pawn shop, go figure. Picked up a new in the wrapper 788 magazine in 243 and the price tag said $15.95. There are more 788 magazines there in different calibers.

Questions:

What is the rate of twist in the 788 - 243 barrels?

What are your favorite loads for this rifle and caliber?

Other than the Ramline plastic stocks, what aftermarket stocks are availible?

When this 788 barrel needs replaced, I would like to rechamber for 264 win mag. Is this even possible with this action?

My 788 i used for years in 6mm had 1&9 so the 243 should be the same, if not then it would be 1&10. One of the most accurate loads in every 243 i have tried is IMR 4064 with 87 gr Hornady BTHP. In my 6mm Rem the most accurate is the same bullet but with Win 760. I believe McMillian, Boyd Boys, and MPI makes stocks for the 788 and rebarreling to 264 Win Mag wouldn't work other than opening up the bolt and making it a single shot.

Layoutman, I just bought a 788 in 243 but need a magazine for it. The price you picked-up yours for is a steal. I did an internet search and e-bay ones are going for around $50 and up. Could you send me the name and phone number of the place you got yours at for $15.95 (dldepp@yahoo.com)I need to call them. Thanks

The 264 Win Mag is not possible on the action. The Magnum case wouldn't fit through the loading port even if the bolt face was opened up. It is also to short(action) and doesn't even have enough stroke for the Mag cases. The deal on the magazine is a steal for sure. Bought one in 223 for $28 at a gun shop a few months ago.

YOWSER!!

Bolt compression on the rear locking 788 action is not something I would want to play with if it was my head at the back end of the action.

Magnum bolt faces have quite a bit of reward bolt thrust, and you generally need a good stong front locking action for them. The 788 is a great action, but it was not designed for "Magnum Type" punishment like a 264 Win Mag would deliver.

When you get tired of the 788 and want a .264 come to Texas and sell it as the 788's in .243 will bring $350 - $400.00 in these parts. That would go a long ways toward the purchase of a .264 and you would have a magnum action built for the cartridge you want.

My .222 788 has yet to wear out and it has put many a menacing target on the range out of business in the X ring. It has also accounted for many critters and the latest was a mouthing off crow in the top of a big oak tree about 250 yards away. I really enjoyed that shot and the bugger swung around upside down, still holding onto the limb, and when he fell it seem like forever before he hit the dirt.

You hit paydirt on that magazine. Any time I find a 788 magazine, for any caliber, for sale at at gun show or someone happens to mention one and it is less that $30.00 I buy it. Not only will your friends that have one appreciate you passing on a good deal, they make great trade goods as well. The only upgrade I've ever made to my rifle is an adjustable trigger and it was worth every penny.

Good luck and good hunting in '06,
Charles

Charles B , If you don't mind me asking. What trigger did you pick up for the 788? I've seen some timney triggers in some magazines. Just wondering if you had one or someone elses.

I guess I got a steal on the one I picked up yesterday. It was $270.00 tax included. I put it on lay-away. I have been looking for one for several months. I really wanted a .22-250 or .223 but couldn't pass on the .243.

So what would a Rem 788 in a 22-250 be worth these days?? I have one and am thinking about selling or trading it. Is there a place to check on values of used guns??
