Remington Mod 7

OK.... I am looking at building up a gun for my wife. She is an excellent shooter with ML stuff (I mean real muzzle loaders, Not inline sabot stuff) and rim fire with good barrels and light triggers but for whatever reason I have never put her in a CF rifle..... MY Bad.

I think a Model 7 would make into a pretty nice little gun if I put a good barrel and trigger (1 lb or so) on one in either .223AI, .243AI or 6.5 Grendel. Any one have any experience with Model 7's. I have seen some stuff on the net that seems to say they are pretty good..... I guess this would be an all round gun for her for little stuff up to deer and speed goat.

What do ya say

If you are going to rebarrel it, there is little to sense in using a model 7 over a model 700. There is far more aftermarket available for the 700.

If you have the action already, then go forth and build. There is nothing concerning of the action itself.

I have a 6.5x47 Lapua on a M7 action. I like it quite well enough...but I won't be purposefully building off of one intentionally in the future.

As for the chambering, a standard 243 with the right twist is an amazing little cartridge. That or a 6mm Creedmoor or even the X47 Lapua case wouldn't be a terrible idea.

One may ask the planned use? Deer hunting out of State, or mostly range shooting?

I have a Model 7 'Predator' in 243, very nice.

As I mentioned this will likely be a beginning all round gun for her. That sounds strange given our ages but there it is.

I envision a bit of a mini varmint type gun here with a slightly heavier barrel profile than is the general issue on Mod 7's. As you likely know, no cf rifles for deer here in IL, so that would be an out of state thing but we do that any way so no biggie.

She enjoys shooting and is very interested in predator killing... yes killing. She hates coyotes with a horrid passion.

I have a Model Seven Predator in 223. It's a nice, light, easy handling rifle. I prefer the 700 though, mainly because I'm taller and have long arms and like the extra stock length.

Bought my wife a synthetic stainless Model 7 in 7mm-08 & she just loves it. She has shot many deer, turkey, & predators (mainly fox & coyote while deer hunting) with it. It's certainly not a target rifle but with factory Federal 120 NBT's it will shoot 1 moa, plenty good for her 250 yard max range. Her greatest like is the weight, walking with it & climbing up into a tower stand. It's got a 20" barrel. Just saying,

Thanks guys, keep it coming. Does the Predator model have a heavier barrel than the std Mod 7?

MasterBlaster: she has been shooting triggers, hunting, lighter than 1 lb for 30 years.... Normally I would agree with you however in this case I think she will be fine.....

The predator model is the "magnum" contour, with flutes. I do like them in factory configuration...just decided to build a custom on mine.

Not a Remington but cz is coming out with the 6.5 Grendel sometime this year in the 527 I have four 527s and will be getting a Grendel went l find one, bought a 527 carbine in 7.62x39 for daughter gun is light, trigger is nice main trigger set at 2 pounds set trigger at about 10 oz though about getting another for my self lot easier to tote around woods than any of my 700 classics, but will wait for the Grendel.

As an aside, I hunt deer in IL fairly often, 30 miles north of Peoria or so. There are always lots of coyotes around. I was down for the late anterless season, mostly just helping a guy take stands down. I concentrated on coyotes.

Between one evening hunt and the next morning I saw 8 coyotes, at least 6 different ones. 3 were called in on the deer stand, the rest by chance. I got 4 shots with my Knight 'Elite' M-L. Two were DRT, one some hair, one a likely twig deflection.

Plenty of coyotes in IL, they also seem receptive to calling, virgin ears, private property.

This is your answer right here. No "building" required.
CZ's are known for their accuracy and durability and you'll have two pull weight options with their excellent double set trigger.

The carbine mentioned above would make for a great ladies rifle weighing in at just under 6#.
They're only made in 7.62X39 and 223 but but the 223's a 9 twist so it'll handle heavier bullets. Both chamberings have mild recoil and will take small-med sized game at reasonable distances. (including Deer)

I have been advised about the CZ being available. Good gun, great trigger, but I cant stand those clips..... makes the gun ugly as a mud fence. I want a drop gate mag just like a Mod 700 or Win 70.. (et al).

Heck their upper level guns are built with drop gate, so why not shape up the 527..... Just me I guess

Yea, we are "blessed" with yotes. Down here in the bottom of the state is no different if not more so because of terrain and cover.

I live almost dead center in among the Shawnee NF holdings and there are plenty. However, these are not your wide open spaces coyotes. These are more "brush Dogs." Right where I am a long shot would be along a pasture edge or ag field edge out to about 200-250 at most. Yea, you can find some long stuff 45 minutes to the south of me in the Mississippi/Ohio river flood plain but... I have shot and killed there out to 400. These yotes here will work a call but you have to really be on your toes and heed the wind and its changes.

Its fun but it will keep you awake.

Glad you got some action around Peoria.......

Roy Bertaloto can modify the magazine if it gives you heart burn.

I had him do one of mine back when the price was half of what he charges now. Still worth the money though.
