remington model 798

They are essentially the same rifles Charles Daily was importing. Remington is now importing them along with the 799 which is very similar to the CZ 527's without the controlled round feed and the single stack magazine.

The 798 is a commercial Mauser 98 copy that seems to be a very good rifle. The 798 is a controlled feed action like the original 98.

Remington imports the barreled actions and puts on the stocks here in the US. They should make a dandy deer and elk rifle. From the one I handled they are all steel and look very well built.

Ruger is basically the same action with the controlled round feed made in the US. I think the Hawkeye is a pretty gun, but haven't fooled with the new Ruger triggers. The old Ruger triggers were pretty crappy. As far as accuracy goes the Rugers have a good rep.

Another you might look at are the CZ 550's. Another Mauser Clone with good wood and metal and a beautiful single set trigger from the factory. You can look at the prices of them here and I'd take a look at CZ's web site if you find any interest in them. I shoot a couple of CZ 527 Varmint rifles and am certainly impressed.

The Remington is an economy rifle that is roughly finished and fitted and isn't in the same class as the CZ or Ruger rifles.

i would have to agree with GC on that, i personally think that the CZs are the best bang for the buck for price, quality, features ect

The Reminton 798 is made in Serbia in the same factory that made the Interarms Mark X. The 798 is a very good rifle, they don't have as fast a lock time as a Ruger, Remington, or a Savage. However you can put any caliber from 22-250 to 458 Lott on them. For relieability nothing beats the Mauser the bolt can be taken apart for cleaning without any tools. Also you can get Mauser parts that will work in the 798 in just about any corner of world.
If you have ever hunted in Africa you will find that most PH's will be armed usually with a Mauser 98 as an every day working rifle. All of my serious hunting rifles are on Mauser 98's with one exception a double 500 Nitro Express 3 1/4".

If they were selling for the price that the old Daly's were selling for I would recommend them but for esentially $500 you can get a lot better rifle in the Ruger or CZ IMO.

The key word there is "roughly". I handled one at Green Top Sporting Goods here in Richmond. The action was so tight and rough I thought I was gonna break the bolt handle trying to open the action. Just my opinion though from handling one.

tunahunter,
There are plenty of variations of the original M98 action, all are not built the same, and, especially to the same degree of fit and finish. The CZ is a much better finished and refined version of this action than the 798. The newest Ruger M77 and classic claw extractor M70 Winchester are also variations of the M98 action. Plenty to choose from! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

GC Absoluttly! Lots of variations my personal preference is a customized Obendorf I have a few of them. Mark X parts will work in an Obendorf and vise-versa with very little or no fitting. The CZ is a great rifle I have an earlier Model 602 in 416 Rem it holds five round in the magazine plus one in the chamber. CZ has has taken the Mauser action to another level of improvement and at a resonable cost. Here is A little trivia on the CZ rifles "all action threads are metric" (thank-you Napolean!) not a problem but one variation.

All my serious hunting rifles a custom jobs when I go hunting I have a kit that contains an extractor, a firing pin and spring. I don't have that luxury with my model 70 338, Remingtons or my CZ 602 but I do have it with my Whitworth's, and Obendorf's.
