Remington r15 review

Though my wife would shoot me with it if I brought it home, I am looking at a Remington r15. Any reviews? The only hang up I have seen with it is the trigger but I am guessing that is a standard issue with the platform. I am a princess about triggers, so it might be a deal breaker.

Also, what is a good price on one?

I have one in .204, 22 in. Barrel. I couldn't be happier with it. I'm sure there are better AR's, but mine is very accurate and does everything I want it to. I am going to change the trigger, though. It's not terrible, but not the best.

I built my own, a buddy new to the game bought a 18" barreled R15 VTR (IIRC) and had me set it up for him, mount scope sight it in etc. As a general rule I clean every new gun inside and out to remove any factory packing oils etc that may gum up the action or trigger assembly. I noticed in this process that the fire control group in the R15 seemed pretty... well for lack of a better word "chincy". It was all metal, but it was nowhere near as robust as my milspec build. I am not one of those guys that everything HAS to be milspec and all that but I trust steel barstock over tubing anyday. That said, the rifle shot great and had a better trigger pull than mine. Seem to be great rifles, and realistically you'll never probably need the beefier parts of a milspec AR unless you get the permits for full auto fire or get dumped into the sandbox. If the R15 is exactly what you want, go for it because it is a nice rifle. If you find yourself thinking you might want a couple things changed, build your own. One thing to think about if you're OCD like me is that it will be near impossible to match that camo if you want to switch stocks, grips, or forearms. If you're a tinkerer, build it. If you just want an off the shelf rifle that works, the R15 is for you.

I bought a used R-15 off of this site last year for a buddy of mine. It was a solid shooter in factory form but it became a great shooter when I installed a Rock River 2-stage match trigger in it. Made all the difference. The R-15 is a solid choice. If you like it dont hesitate. You could do much worse.

Love mine. In fact, I'm on a plane with it heading to Wyoming to do a little yote extermination right now. Great shooter with a decent trigger.

Thanks for the comebacks. I would probably want to change the trigger then as I am used to my 2.5 pound no creep rifle triggers.

Now to just convince the wife....she does not like the idea of the ar platform. She is Canadian and they don't get it up there. She ok'd a browning bar but they are definitely more expensive and the one I want is hard to come by. And not nearly as cool looking.

As some have already stated just change the trigger out for a better one and you will be good to go. There are a lot of aftermarket triggers out there. ARGold, Timney, JP, RRA , Just a few of the many options. I put jp springs into my RRA trigger to get to the 2,5lbs pull but it is still a two stage trigger.

I was going to inquire about accuracy. I am looking at the smaller lighter one, can't remember the model. I think they called it carbine. That will affect accuracy with a short barrel.

My current .223 is a tack driver. Hoping to get something that will print reasonable groups. I am looking for it for close combat in the woods anyways, so I gues it isn't that important.

What kind of groups are you getting with a stock gun and trigger?

The accuracy is plenty good for coyote hunting. The only real upgrade I can see right away would be the trigger. You can shoot the factory one as it is not as bad as some, but you will want to eventually upgrade it.

I had seen one locally for 900 and change a couple of months ago. I just called around and no one had any and they were 1100 plus now. Holy cow. My bolt action is looking really good now.

They are pretty salty. You are buying the name and camo. You can do it cheaper with quite a few different manufacturers. They are a good gun, but im a cheap skate, and its fun to build your own.

99% certain that you don't have Academy Sports in Ohio, but there is an all black R-15 from Remington in the carbine length that we sell for $899.99. Unless its an Academy exclusive(which I doubt) you should be able to find one near you.

One of the problems I have on the home front is the anti black gun mindset. The camo ones without all of the stuff on it is apparently a little more acceptable. Remington is the least expensive of the finished ones.

If it weren't for the issue of appearance I would probably go with a different brand, something less expensive. I know they are the same thing, but appearances are everything.

For the price range I might go with a browning bar 243. They would both accomplish the same thing in the end, a fast follow up shot.

I am thinking of getting through this year with my perfectly good rifle and upgrading next year if I still have the itch, unless I come across a good deal. It looked like a sweet piece at around 900$. Not so much over 1k.

Nope, been to academy sports though in Texas. Rifles aren't used for much here in Ohio and I suspect they don't sell as many overall so stock and selection are always an issue when buying here

Now we all know that Remington, Bushmasters and DPMS are all owned by the same company and the AR's are made in the same place.
