Remington VTR

Kinda kicking around another rifle in 260 and looked at a Rem 700 VTR with the triangle barrel. For those that have them, do they shoot? I have read the newer ones with 5R rifling seem to be more accurate than the first ones. Not sure about that barrel. Aren't barrels supposed to be round???

I don't have one but my brother has 2 and they both shoot very well. 223-308. I have the AR with the triangle barrel and it's a shooter!

I got one soon after they came out in a 22-250. It shot decent, around 1" 5 shot groups, with only a trigger adjustment. I removed the barrel bump and free floated the stock and it shot much better, all groups under 1". I like it.

I had one in .308. It shot MOA with multiple loads. I ended up putting in a B&C stock and it did make some minor improvements. I have thrown around that .260 VTR in the past as well. My only complaint with that setup was the muzzle break.

After looking long and hard at it, I ended up buying a Rem 700 Sendero SFII in 25-06. I just couldn't cotton up to the triangle barrel and the muzzle break. The plastic stock was another negative for me too. Guess I need to sell my 260 dies and brass now.

Nice choice in the Sendero and caliber also. The VTR muzzle brake was incredibly loud and I had it cut off and re-crowned the barrel. I have since put it in a HS Precision stock as well. It's a great shooter now. I thought the barrel was a little gimmicky but it has grown on me. Good luck with your setup.

While I understand the logic of the triangle barrel, round ones been working for a long time. I wasn't crazy about the break and figured the stock would be the first thing to go. The Sendero already had a good stock and a round fluted stainless barrel. When I weighed costs for upgrades, the Sendero got the vote!

Mine is a 223. The brake is really loud, almost puts mine on par with the 30-06. Timney trigger, all else original, it comes pretty close to 1" @ 100.
I'm hoping to try the Magpul Hunter on it, someday.

I agree! At the range, I could tell it was loud even though wearing both plugs and muffs. However, after that first shot at a fox in the quiet of the night, I immediately decided it was coming off. I always felt that was kind of gimmicky too. I really like my VTR now, but it took the changes to get there. You made a great choice.

I had one in .233, sold it because I wanted to go suppressed. Shot okay, didn't use it much. The purpose of the triangular barrel was trying to have the rigidity of a bull barrel without the weight.

I have one in .308 and it is an outstanding shooter. The triangle barrel is novel and it has grown on me. Mine has the muzzle brake (some new ones don't), I like it for the simple reason that it can ride muzzle down on the floor board with out damage to my crown, same as the flash hider on my AR's protecting the muzzle.

I've had a VTR in 22-250 for years and swapped out the stock and trigger and it is my 'go to' rifle to just about most critters. Most folks either love them or hate them. Yes, with the muzzle flash they are loud but my argument to that is how many shots are you taking? Unless you're working on load development at the range, 1 shot is all I need.
