Remington XP-100

A friend of mine has a Remington XP-100 that he finally took out of his safe. I have never seen one and my first question was..."what caliber is it?" It does not say anyplace on the gun. So, how do we find out what the caliber is? Any help would be nice. Thanks.

Are we talking about a bolt action pistol or a rifle? If it is an early pistol with brown stock it is probably a Remington 221 Fireball. Some later models were chanbered for .223 Rem. and had black plastic stocks. There were also other center fire chamberings for the pistol. Hope this helps.

IIRC, First introduced in 1963, chambered in .222 rem, then later in the .221 Fireball. Later production included many different chamberings from .221 Fireball to .35 Rem. Maybe remove the action from the stock to inspect the bottom of the barrel. If still no stamping, I would have a chamber cast done to be sure.

I have 2 that is .35 Remington they came with the brown stock. In later years they came out with a rear grip stock that I believe were black. The .221 fireballs were a shorter barrel. Post a picture, but all I have seen the caliber was stamped on the barrel. They also made the XP in 7mm BR and maybe a few others.

I had one of these bought in the 80's. All I can remember was the 10.5" barrel was a .221 while there was a 7mm available with 14" barrel. The .221 version had a vent rib while the 7mm didn't. These are the only calibers I can remember from the factory. I'm puzzled that the barrel isn't stamped. Mine clearly had the stamping.

The .221 that I had was extremely accurate. At 100 yards the gun would make just a ragged hole shooting the 52 gr Nosler match bullet. Powder was IMR4227.

The 7mm didn't even have ammo available for it. You had to buy the cases and make your own.

The XP 100 was only made in 221 Fireball untill the mid-eighties, then other calibers were available. If it does not have the caliber stamped on the barrel it has been re-barreled, take it to a gun smith and have the chamber cast to see what it is.

Sounds like it has been rebarreled. Factory barrels were stamped on top. The7mm were 7mm internationals. They came in alot of different calibers.

Like Blackhawk & Catkiller said, most likely rebarreled. Haven't seen a factory one not stamped with caliber. Many were rebarreled during the 70'/80's when silhouette shooting was popular.

Iv bought a bunch of them. Everyone Iv seen or bought had the cal on it.

22-250ohio what cal XP you wanting to build?

Iv got 2 being built right now.

If it has a 11 & 1/2" barrel and sharksfin front sight, more than likely is .221 Fireball caliber but, it it has no front sight and 14" barrel could be a caliber more like .223 or even 22-250 or whatever Remington made them in before shuting down the production? Try a search on XPs on the net? Amd ask for pictures. Here's mine in .223

I had one of the first to come out (in 221 FireBall)... and it was a hoot to shoot (that's a pun, son).

It was extremely accurate - better than many rifles.

I had one almost identical to this except that it had iron sights so that it would be legal in IHMSA competition. In that sport you had to knock down life size steel silhouettes of chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams out to as far as 200 meters. My XP was chambered in 7-08 and I assure you, a 175 grain bullet would flatten a 200 meter ram with ease. Unfortunately it was also a might rough on the hand and wrist and I wore a handball glove with the index finger cut out of it when I shot it.

Many years ago I traded that beast off for something a bit more fun (a 1979 Yamaha RD400) and wherever it is now I don't know. Neat gun though.

It's just dangerous to own a gun that isn't stamped for caliber. I'll send you $200 to dispose of it properly

.

Would love to build one of these in a 14"-16" 6mmBR with a 1-9" or 1-10" twist

He never did take it to a smith. He threw a pair of calipers in the bbl and said it was 6mm. Put it back in his safe and that was that. This guy has so many safe queens. They were all inherited when his dad passed away and he wont shoot one of em. he wont even sell me a Mouser 98 action so I can do a build. That's ok. If they were mine, I cant say I wouldn't do the same.
