Is the barrel spinning in the blocks? You need a bigger hammer. Seriously. And give the wrench a good, solid whack. Those wood blocks may not provide enough grip with some barrels. A piece of leather belt or inner tube scraps between the block and barrel may provide a better grip.
For first time removals, I prefer an action wrench to the blocks.
