need a new barrel for my savage 10. found some sites that sell kits that have barrel wrench , etc.. they say that it is very easy as long as you can follow directions. is this accurate or is there more to it than that?

Its easy. I use the nut wrench and an action wrench. No vise needed. You will need Goand No Go guages and some anti seize lube too. all kinds of good info... I got all the info I needed from the guys on this site.

The 1st time I did my Savage swap it took 30 min & thats because I wanted to do it slowly. The hardest part was busting the barrel nut loose & its all downhill from there. I now have spare barrels in my safe depending on what I may hunt/shoot.

now if i read this correct you can ghange to a different caliber just by changing bolt head and barrel?
or can you only use similar cartridge sizes?

You may need a new barrel but it may only need cleaned.

If you just want to change barrels Brownell's sells all the tools.

It depends on what action you have short or long. If you have a short action small shank you can change between all the short cartridges except the magnums. You may have to change the bolt face depending on what you have and/or what you are changing to. If you have a small caliber .17, .204, .223 etc. and are changing to 22-250, .243, .308 you will need to change bolt face too. If you have a long action small shank you can go to any caliber but the magnums you may have to put an adapter/filler into the mag well to run the short action cartridges. To go to the magnums cartridges you will need a large shank action, some have had barrels chambered for some of the mags in small shank and have gotten away with it but many barrel manufacturers will not chamber a small shank barrel to a mag caliber. The bolt heads are easy to change and are readily available. Welcome to the brotherhood of the barrel nut the possibilities are endless in what you can put together without the need of a gunsmith and minimal tools.

can get an e.r. shaw barrel in 243, the old one is a .22-250. so now i have to decide if i want to wait 6 weeks for a barrel, or get a .243.

Jim at Northland Shooter supply has barrels in stock too, from factory to customs a link to his site is on savageshooters website.

Check out the CBI barrels from Northland. They are button pulled barrels from Kreiger. VERY nice pre-fit barrels and extremely accurate. Price is right also!!
