Reticle versus Reticule.....

Back in the 70's the word reticule was used much more than it is now, I think Redfield even used it back in the day of the Widefields.

So I saw on another site someone correct another person when they used reticule, and gave the definition of it as a woman's purse or bag, argument done as it looked like the guy had done his homework.

I looked it up and I think it was wikepedia gave reticle as a grid of fine lines.... reticule as the purse thing, I thought okay that's what it is.

Looking at further dictionary and thesaurus type references it became apparent that reticule has a definition of fine lines and grid marks as well.

Both are correct, but dang the arguments can get hot on that topic when someone flames someone for using reticule. I used to use it but got corrected a few times so I just switched to the more commonly used spelling. Sometimes common usage changes over the years.

Just thought it was interesting when I saw a heated debate somewhere else on it, both fly.

"Both" might fly, but reticule doesn't fly very well - it is old slang spelling (you can find "ain't" in the dictionary).

If you don't want to be thought as a dummy, then reticle is the way to "fly".

That's the way I saw it, it was easier to simply call it what 97% of everyone else was rather than go a different way. Not to mention the other definition is a woman's purse.

What brings a smile to my face is when guys spell it recticle.

We used to have a standing bet on how to say "Swarovski". I bet my buddy that 50% of people can't pronounce the word correctly. He won the bet but not by much.

My tech school first sergeant thought he was hilarious calling out my name with an extra couple of letters.

It's pronounced Shath and he'd yell out "Snatch", thought he was a real comedian he did.

I'd had enough at one point so I didn't answer, roll call was for a couple of hundred people so they wanted it fast as possible. He kept yelling snatch and was looking right at me, I acted like I didn't hear him. He yelled "Snatch I'm talking to you, you better answer". The group was in hysterics by this point, I told him "sir, my name is Shath, not Snatch.

He continued to say it wrong about half the time and I answered rather than make a big deal out of it, besides everyone thought it was funny as all get out.
