Rifle Recommendation

I live in Illinois and I am looking to get a bolt action Coyote hunting rifle. Most shots are going to be between 50 to 150 yards. Budget around the $1000.00 area.
Thanks,

Mike

For that range 223. Because your in Illinois its gonna be cheaper in the long run than a 22-250 my next pick. Seems like a lot of guys like Tikkas, I only have ar’s in 223 and am so glad I moved out. Lots of coyotes in Illinois.

Illinois has some pretty decent deer hunting in certain areas so taking that into consideration I'd probably look at something in a 243 but if this was, only, ever going to be used for coyotes in the range you specified the easy button would be a 223. Tikka makes some very accurate rifles and they have a $75 mail in rebate on all Tikka rifles until the end of the month going now. You can get a Tikka T3x Lite or their Compact model for $749 - $75 rebate which would put you well under your price cap and leave you enough money for a decent scope.

Tikka. No doubt. Best rifle for the money currently.

Caliber? Many choices abound. 223, 243, 7mm/08, 6.5 Creedmoor ..........

To clarify, You needed to purchase the rifle by Dec. 31st to qualify for the rebate. You have until Jan 31st to submit the form through Beretta.

Use whatever u want for coyotes though, ain’t Illinois great. And not sure about straight wall cartridges. I just hunted coyotes in Illinois

Per the terms and conditions of the rebate it says "Eligible guns include all T3X rifles purchased and paid in full, NEW at retail, in the United States, between the dates of November 6th and January 31, 2024.". This is a cut and past of the terms and conditions from their site about the rebate and the dates.

My recommendation. Go to a large gunshop and handle a bunch of guns and see which one fits you best and has the features you like.

Im not a fan of detachable magazines I worry that I'm going to find that when I get where I'm going the mag will be someplace else. I'm not a road hunter that needs to load a rifle fast and I don't mind loading and unloading a rifle.

Check how you feel about the safety location.and operation some make quite a snap if you aren't careful releasing it. Safety location, most times that's not a problem but I have one rifle with the safety on the left side of the wrist and another with safety in.the front of the trigger guard, they take a little getting used to.

Cartridge, I like one I can hold on fur to 300 yards. That said I have a few that are my favorites and just use them where I won't need to shoot that far.

Have fun finding your new rifle.
