rockchucks out?

Soon to be Wyo. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gifI'm a commuting resident now.

I was hoping someone from a warmer climate had seen some and then I could kinda guess how much longer it would be until I could expect to see some.

There's not alot to shoot at out there right now if a coyote doesn't come in. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

sorry,

Yellow bellied marmots,

I know they come out somewhat early. I can remember seeing them while hiking through snow(before vehicles have been able to drive up roads). I just never have paid attention to a certain date to expect seeing them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

They have to eat . When the ground's covered with snow they can't get to grass. There's nothing for them anyway while the grass is still brown from winter. They come out in spring when things start to green up.

I have seen them out in small numbers durring dead winter on really sunny warm days. This year, I have not seen any out down here, I guess due to deep snow. I start seeing high numbers around middle march ealy April and once you get new green growth on the grass.

You've probably heard of woodchucks (groundhogs) haven't you? Rockchucks are their western, mountain dwelling, cousins.

Rockchucks eat mainly greens. They eat many types of grasses, berries, lichens, mosses, roots and flowers. Snow makes this food source inaccessible this time of year, so they hibernate through the winter in their burrows.

Here is some pictures of rock chucks Merv and I shot last year in Idaho. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif GENE'O

Cool pictures. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif You make me anxious to see that green grass again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Man, those look like Pdogs on steroids!! Are all the shots over 300 yds, or do you get 100 yd opportunities?

NASA most shots are way over 250 yards. I like the long shots makes it fun that way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif GENE'O

Here's one I got last Spring on a Central Oregon farm. I never had a shot over fifty yards and they are fairly retarded so there can be good action.

On this shoot the critters were living in rock piles next to grass growing fields. Flat terrain and great shooting.

If a rock pile quiets down too much just walk to another one and rotate back.

DEFCON some people eat them I don't. The last ones I tryed to skin had way to meany fleas on them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif GENE'O

I saw some out this last weekend around my neck of the woods. To bad they were either in city limits or private property. I think in the next few weeks it should start to get good. I'll be getting my AR this week so I can't wait to get it out.
