RRA 458 Socom ??

Greetings all,

I have settled on the 458 socom. Now I have used the search function here to try and find a reputable dealer in the 458. Some are out of my monetary reach, RRA is within grasping range. Now the questions. I am not wanting a flame war here, Just asking questions to those who have experience with RRA. Since I do not.

1. Is RRA a quality upper in a 458?

2. Should I save up for the "higher priced uppers" instead?

3. How have warranty issues been resolved, if you have experienced any?

Thank you all in advance for you responses. Thank you Dan Carey for changing my mind on the 50 b.

Sincerely<

RRA is top quality, buy with confidence.
I recently ordered a 458 upper for myself and you have some options to choose from as far as FF tube and muzzle device goes.
I've yet to have any issues with the RRAs that I own.

RRA has a lifetime warranty, its good stuff, my 458 upper is a custom by tromix, but I have an RRA varminter, and 3 NM lowers.
My shilen barreled custom upper shoots around 1MOA with about any 300 gr HP load, all I need for 150 yard deer/bear hunting, my guess is an RRA with a FF tube will do as well.

I got tired of waiting for RRA to get production started so I had Marty of Teppo Jutsu build my upper. I had a matched Stag upper and lower so I sent him my stripped upper, I also sent him a 458 muzzel break and my upper was built to my specs as far as barrel diameter ect. I don't know how to post pictures or I would show it off. BTW barely broke in and I am getting 3/4" at 100 yards standing with open sights, better prone. The total wt. is a bit over seven pounds with a loaded mag in place. Now I am saveing for an aimpoint, to see if I can better my groups any. RRA makes good stuff though, from every thing I hear.

Sorry to hi-jack this, but what's the biggest capacity .458 magazine that you can buy?

You guys got me thinking and that's usually expensive. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

That's just about the perfect brush gun for deer/elk/bear, in my opinion.

30 rounders will hold ten or eleven I stop at ten, twenty rounders will hold eight. Basicly your turning a double stack mag into a single stack. The standard Gi mag needs no alteration usually, but some folks are grinding a half circle out on the top front. In my opinion this is doing nothing, but it may make unloading by hand easier.

blinddog,
You are quite an offhand shot to shoot a 3/4 MOA group. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Considering that I am legally blind, and can barely see a five by five foot target backer at 100 yards, putting five rounds into a cloverleaf, touching that can be covered with a quareter impressed the heck out of me too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Just don't ask me to do it all the time. I now take a camera with me, because I know no body believes me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Supposedly .458S will feed through the 90 round snail mags. They hold about 30 rounds of .458S I believe. I haven't tried them.

According to the inventor of the 458S of the two brands of snail mags tried one feeds the other don't. The 458 Socom forum has been haveing problems with getting hijacked by porn spammers I do not know if they are up or not now. I do know that the old threads about mags was lost due to the hijackers, (Lots of great info) I do not know if the webmaster has been able to replace it or was even able to save any of it. They were down, then back up, but they are down again right now.

That's okay on the snail mags, I was just interested in a stick mag and couldn't remember if the .458 used unmodified AR mags. I'm limited to 5 in a semi-auto for hunting big game by state law.

They use the same magazine as the standard ar. So a 30 round will hold ten 458.

30 Standard mags hold ten to eleven rounds twenty round mags hold seven or eight, ten round mags hold five or six as i recall and the five round 223 mags will hold three. The only mod I have heard of is some guys cut a half moon in the front of themag to help with loading. I have also heard the Stainless steel mags are more rigid, and so are better but I have not seen that myself. The Thermold mags may have some issues with being to plyable but again I got that from hearsay and have not seen it for myself.

I'm close to ordering one tomorrow. I think the best deal I found was through AR15sales.com They are I believe $599 shipped for the upper alone. Great price on a RRA upper that should be killer for a hog gun.

I'm currently researching scopes now for it.

Darn my mom, she only told me I'd go blind. She said nothing about being able to shoot like that.
