ruger 10/22 mag

I just bought a used 10/22 in 22 wmr, and took it out and test fired it today. Had trouble with it jamming several times. Was using CCI maxi mags with the tnt hollow point and also had one that didn't go off. The gun has a Volquartsen barrel on it and I thought I made a good buy, but now I don't know. I brought it home and gave it a complete cleaning including the magazine. Anybody else have this problem? I am planninig on trying it again later this week, maybe with some different ammo.

Ruger had an upgrade that used 2 extractors and that was supposed to fix them. Then they supposedly tried them in 17HMR and the recievers cracked so they pulled them off the market and they haven't been available since. At least that's what my buddy's wholesaler told him. I'd call Ruger and talk to them.

edited to add: I've not tried to verify this, it's just what I was told when I tried to buy one a couple of months ago.

I have an original 10-22 mag with the one extractor. It is exrtremely accurate with the factory bbl and I only had problems with it when it got really dirty. I would try another brand of ammo to see what happens. At one time, Ruger would upgrade the old rifles for free. Since you don't have the original bbl, that may be a bust.

Ruger has not put out a .17 HMR. There has been a lot of talk. So many conversions out there I would think there would be no need for them to try. They can sell the .22 mag and let the customer worry about the problems.

I did some checking and didn't find one on gunbroker or auction arms, even checked an OKC wholesaler, no stock on the 22 mag. Finaly found a little info on rimfire central. I was told correctly that they were working on a 17HMR version and had "engineering" problems so they stopped production on the 22 mag version last Febuary but are supposed to start again the middle of this month.

Not that it helps you determine your problem but at least they didn't drop it completely so if yours doesn't have the dual extractors call them and send it in for an upgrade.

Steve they make a 77/17 HMR and HM2, what makes you think they'd pass on the 10/17HMR?

roderunner,

I have an older single extractor 10/22 mag. If yours is still having problem after cleaning, purchase a volquartsen exact edge extractor for under 20 bucks. This should fix your problem. By the way, mine has been a very reliable rifle and I did contact ruger a year ago and they offered to install the double extractor bolt for free. But the above fix was faster.

Are you using match grade ammo? The barrel most likely has a tight match chamber. Clean the bolt face real good and make sure your extractors move freely. Your extractor should have a good sharp edge on it. If its rounded replace it. Few bucks to go with Ruger parts or 20 with the VQ.
Does it look like the firing pin is striking the cases good?
Groves in the top of the bolt wear allowing the pin to rise up too high. I tapped mine with a center punch until I got it back to normal.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I am going to order the volquartsen extractor tommorrow. I don't think its match grade ammo, but not the cheapest stuff on the shelf either. The round that didn't fire was struck well, but I will look at the firing pin closer when I replace the extractor. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again.
