Ruger Hawkeye...WOW!

If you have been following my posts, you know I am in the market for a new deer rifle.

Today I went up the the gunshop and fondled a few new rifles.

I compared the Ruger Hawkeye (both wood and synthetic) to the Remington SPS, the TIKKA, and the Savage. In terms of looks (which don't mean much) the Hawkeye won hands down.

The stock is much stronger on the Hawkeye and does not flex away from the barrel like the Rem and Savage. The fit and finish on the stock and metal was also superior on the Hawkeye.

They sure are nice guns.

Might be a winner.

Seriously, the Rugers have been great weapons for me over the years. I do have a new Tikka Varmint that is becoming more impressive every time I shoot it, though.

You won't be disappointed with the Hawkeye or the Tikka.

I've been hearing some disparaging remarks about the Rugers lately but the Ruger 77 22-250 Varmint I had shot great right out of the box and even better when I put a better trigger on it. I'd buy another one.

I used to only buy Rugers till they priced them out of my reach. I guess thats not really true since a New Ruger 77 can be had for what six or seven hundred? The rifle i am building now is right at nine hundred and is not finished (AR 458 Socom from Marty at Teppo Juttsu) I am still waiting onh the barrel and bolt, The one I bult before this went just over a grand, another AR but 243 WSSM. I guess one of these days i ned to build one in 5.56/.223. I only own one bolt action rifle now a Savage my kids gave me a couple years ago 270 WSM did not think I was going to like it but it shoots a lot better than I can. The other five rifles i own are lever actions and one Ruger 10-22. Oh well I guess I need to start looking for somthing I don't really need huh?

I do like the looks of the new Hawkeye. They weigh considerably more than the tikka but that's not a bad thing at all if you're considering a larger caliber. I can't stand the shiney stainless on the pre-hawkeye models. You can get good shooters in the rugers too. If they don't shoot well it usually just takes some massaging of the stock to remedy the problem.

Take a look at the T3 Deluxe version too.. Wood version of the T3 Lite. IMO a safer bet if you're going for a tack driver.

I once owned the only mini 14 Ruger ever built that would shoot. I didn't know they wouldn't shoot and sold to a friend. Now that I know all the bad things about them I've been trying to buy it back for years because I'm sure it will be a collectors item.

I doubt the deer will ever know it was shot with a Ruger Hawkeye, so go buy it.
