I am looking at getting a Ruger Mini 14 Target with thumb hole and using it as my yote rifle.
Any of you use a Mini 14? I would like to add a picatinny rail for a Thermal.
If you use one, what are your likes and dis-likes?
Thoughts?
Thanks!

Ive tried all versions of the mini 14 and even mini 30. I love the gun but in my 30 plus years of guns the are the most inaccurate rifle I've ever shot. They best i ever got was 4 MOA. Great for HD not for calling yotes. Some are fine with that type accuracy but not me. I wanted the gun to be accurate because I liked how it looked and felt. I have owned 6 different ones because I am a hard learner. You can make them accurate but it will cost you. An AR will beat it any day, [beeep] a lever action would be a better choice and more fun. If you love the gun just know what to expect going in. I understand if you are not an AR guy and want something different. One of my most accurate semiauto rifles is a BAR in 243. Expensive but well worth it. Good luck

Jon

Now if you kill most of your yoted under 100yds it will do fine after that IDK.

Can't seem to get mine to shoot

Yes, this day she was shooting exceptional.
However she does shoot under 1.25 MOA as the norm.
Every Mini I have have had (about 7) would shoot about 1.5 MOA and some better.
This is after putting about $125 worth of work into them.
Home trigger job, Smaller gas bushing, shim bedded and strut.
Definitely Coyote worthy.
I own AR's as well, and yes a bit more accurate overall but I still love the Mini's.

Wow you might be fueling my desire to get another!! Could you message me what exactly you did? I just have a hard time spending the money for how much they want for them.

Thanks
Jon

There is a company that specializes in the Mini. They do a bunch of mods to them and I guess they shoot a bunch better. From what I remember, it isn't cheap either. Probably buy a good bolt action or AR from what the mods cost. I guess it all depends on how good you want a Mini to shoot to justify the costs of mods. In the end, its still a Mini.

Yes, Mini's are over priced right now, but so is everything.
Yes, Accuracy systems Inc. Is pricy.
But you should have little trouble getting a new model Mini to shoot 1.5 Moa. With just a few inexpensive mods.
Most guys cring at putting a couple hundred dollars in a Mini, but have no problem sinking a $1,000 in just an AR upper.
Again, I have both and love both.
Just depends on what platform you prefer.

Oh I would take the mini over the AR anytime. I think the AR is fugly and try to use my bolts most of the time...but I do think they have a purpose so I have a few, but I would give them up in a second if I had to chose. I have fell down that rabbit hole of high dollar uppers so I don't mind spending the money on a gun I actually like. To each his own but I have actually had farmers/ranchers around me said I could call their stuff as long as I didn't use an AR. Which I was happy to do. I don't agree with it but it happens.

Thanks
Jon

One of my main problems with the AR platform, aside from slinging brass everywhere, is no matter how much you do to one or how much money you spend, they still look like an AR. You seen one, you've seen them all. Not knocking them just don't have much sexiness to them. You can even polish a Savage up to look pretty good. LOL!

They don't sling brass.
They carefully place it in the next county

However, simple change of gas bushing and they drop it a few feet from you.

Nice groups! A little work can do wonders for these. Never found mine to be a tack driver! but with the right load it works well out to 150 yrds or so..
