Ruger no 1 in 357

Considering getting a Ruger no 1 in 357 and rechambering in 357 maximum. It would be strictly be used for whitetails as we are now allowed to use straight walled pistol cartridges. Anyone have thoughts on this? I think it would be easier and cheaper to go the contender/encore route, but I just like the Ruger no 1 a little more. I currently use a slug gun and I would love to not get pounded in the shoulder and the wallet anymore. Thanks Chris

A 45-70 fits the straight wall criteria, but not sure if gets past the pistol cartridge part. The loads for the trap door guns shouldn't beat a guy up much and would theoretically be more effective for deer and you have the option of heating up the loads to handle about anything a person would care to shoot. I have no experience with the 357 max, but isn't it pretty much a reloaders round? I imagine it would be effective to moderate ranges. As far as I know it would be a pretty unique rifle the way you are thinking. Not trying to talk you out of anything, just throwing out some thoughts.

I would probably get a lever action in .454 or the S&W 460 if they make it. A buddy of mine has an h&r in .500 Smith and recoil is easily managed. He also has a lever in .454 and he dropped a three hundred pound hog with it.

However, the savage 220 in 20 gauge is a great option. I love the ruger number ones, but I don't think it's worth converting one to a relatively obscure cartridge.

+1 but unless you just want the #1 to be unique (which I'm all for) I'd simply find a pre Remlin 1894 in 44Mag.
Throw a good peep site with fiber optic front bead on her and rock on.

I think a number one will be a much better option than either Thompson. I wasn't aware the ruger made the number one in .357, but I have seen number three carbines chambered for it. Keep in mind that even in .357 magnum you can approach or exceed 30/30 ballistics with lil gun powder and 158gr slugs. Those loads are proven deer killers.

Thanks everyone I am going to get my ducks in a row and find one. I have also been tempted by both the 357 and 44 ruger 77.
