Ruger No. 1

How many of you shoot a Ruger No. 1? This gun is at least a "9" on the cool scale despite its finicky nature.

What are your thoughts? Pics?

I have a #1V, that shoots better than I do. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I had another #1V, that wouldn't hit the side of a red barn. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

As far as being finicky, mine shoots "decent" (under 1.5") with most anything you feed it. But it will shoot 1/2" or better with certain ammo. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cool factor? A NINE? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif They're more like a TEN in my book. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif But then again...you either love 'em or hate 'em. If I just feel the need to go see how itty bitty groups I can shoot at the range, this is the rifle that goes in the truck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Alright potomacduck...are you setting and my brother setting me up. My brother digs me all the time for my Ruger #1's. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif I am close to Mt. Airy,Md.

I have a 1974 model Ruger #1 in 22/250 that has shot 1/2 inch since I bought it in 1974. I have a Ruger #1-V in 204 that drove me crazy but now shoots .4 to .5.

I re-bedded both rifles myself but the long throat of the .204 took some rounds to find the sweet spot both in forend pressure and seating depth.

The ruger #1's are handsome rifles and can break your heart
but they will perform with some sandpaper and bedding compound. There barrels have gotten better as well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

If you want some help in bedding issues send me a P.M. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

My "GO TO" rifles are:

1 - a Ruger #3 (started out as a carbine version of the #1) that I got in pieces. A #5 contour shillen barrel from Midway, a Moyer trigger, a #1 quarter rib, bluing and LOTS of stock work later and I have a great shooting highly modified 223 preditor killing machine. Extremely solid feeling rifle thats short enough to carry muzzel down without worry of scraping the ground. I love this rifle ... it even pushed my other favorite back in the closet and that one is:

2 - a Ruger #1 in 22-250. This rifle was a great shooter .... that was until I got the #3. I disassembled the #1 as a parts assembly guide for the #3. It should have been no big deal. The gun went back together smoothly with no problems, but it started shooting horribly. I must have messed up the harmonics or somehting. I bedded and floated the forarm and it shoots better now.

I like the Ruger #1/#3 platform a whole bunch. Its strong solid and extremely safe. Open the action, take the shell out of the highly visible chamber and you are safe to go anywhere. One thing about it though ... and I'm not really much for fancy rifles, my guns/rifles are working animals ... the side plates or surfaces really absolutely scream for engraving. The thought of having a nice simple stylish coyote on one side and a bobcat on the other appeals to my sence of rightness somehow.

Have a 1B 22-250 with Kepplinger trigger in it. It shoots 1/2" groups. Have another in 243 sittin' here with a Moyers on it. Bought it for the great lookin' wood and still ain't shot it. Both have Nikon Monarchs on 'em, as they look great on these rifles IMHO. ----2MG

My #1B has always shot as good as I let it. It's much too purdy for belly crawlin in the snow, but sometime you gotta do what you gotta do.

Redfrog is a big fan of #1's as well. Ya know what I love doing. I like hunting with an AR guy who swears that you need the follow-up shot of a semi automatic and taking a double right in front of him or rolling a runner after a miss. They say it can't be done ... they are wrong! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have 3 also. A 1-B 280, a 1-B 270 WBY and a 1-V Stainless 204. The 204 has a Kepplinger single set, but the other 2 are basically untouched.

The 280 is my everyday Deer rifle, I can't remember the last time it's missed, probably at least 12 or 15 Deer back. Killed a 10 pointer with it last month at a lasered 310 yds with a handloaded 120 TSX. The 270 WBY I just basically look at, LOL. The 204 has taken groundhogs out to 400 with factory Hornady ammo. It shoots factory stuff so good that, even though I have the dies and a good stockpile of components, I haven't bothered handloading for it yet. Not much room for improvement.

I love all 3 rifles.

Surprisingly enough the triggers on both 1-Bs are pretty good. Plenty good for Deer hunting. I've never messed with either. I have a trigger scale and the 280 measures at 3 1/4 lbs, a nice crisp 3 1/4 lbs. Good enough in my book.

Well, seein' as how you asked for pics......

Newbie here--also No. 1 lover.

Between my brother and myself we have a few:

1976 1B/270 Win.--1/2 inch any day
1B/300 Win.--1/4 to 1/2 inch most days
1V/22-250---1/4 to 1/2 inch
1S/45-70----1 inch to 1 1/4 inch
1B/338 Win-- don't know yet--unfired
1H/416 Rigby--1 1/2 to 2 inches
1H/458 Win----ditto
1976 1S/45-70--1 1/2 to 2 inches

Gene, my brother, probably has another one or two hidden someplace.
Looking for a good 1B in 22-250.

Cheers,

Jim
