is the ruger ranch rifle the same thing as a ruger mini 14? ive heard that the mini 14 isnt that accurate and Field and Stream tested a ranch rifle a while back and said it was very accurate. any thoughts on rugers ranch rifle?

Check Rugers website.
I think the ranch rifle is the 30 caliber version.

the mini 14 Ranch is a 223 the term "ranch" is a reference to the design of the reciever. they are a crapshoot on how they shoot ,I have on and it is a spray and pray you hit something. at 100 yards the best I ever got with a scope is about 5" patern like with a shotgun. In my opinion all they are good for is making a lot of noise and loosing most of the brass. If you are planing on hunting coyotes DON'T get a mini14. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Had one, looks great, shoots like crap. There is a compamy on AR15.com selling scratch and dent AR's for $550. A mini is almost that much.

You can build yourself an AR for the same money as a new mini-14.

Better to take a shotgun with 00 Buck. The shotgun will probably group better @ 100. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Correct. The bolt/receiver was redesigned to side-eject and it allows you to mount a scope without the brass hitting it. It also comes with a set of Ruger scope rings that fit the receiver "notches" (but I believe they are standard Weaver rings, not 100% sure on that).

I put a heavy barrel on mine and actually hit a coyote at around 250 yds. Its the first thing blood I've ever drawn with it. I don't know whether to try it again or put it back in the safe.

I must be lucky - the two Ranch Rifles I have owned have been acceptably accurate for 150 yard coyotes. My new one, a retooled 580 series, is more accurate than my older one and shoots to about 2 - 2/12 inches at 100 yards. Not near as accurate as my sub-MOA Sako .223 bolt gun, but good enough for a rough and tumble truck/farm gun. I like mine because I can carry it in my truck uncased without alarming the farmers I come into contact with. An AR would definitely raise eyebrows.

When actually going calling, I usually carry my Sako. But I have killed a number of incidental coyotes with the Ranch Rifle. I wouldn't want it for my only predator gun, but it does serve a function. By the way, neither Ranch Rifle has ever jammed, ever, even with a variety of aftermarket and factory mags.
