+1 on the shotgun once you have let them get close. If they are swing down wind on you, change sounds or mouth howl/bark at them.  Unless you have been pegged, they will often stop to see where that other dog is. You will need to be on them or quick. Once they see you, they will kick it into light speed if they haven't received your special delivery.
